Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the grasslands (pampas) and shrublands of southwestern Brazil and northern Uruguay. Unlike purely tropical tarantulas, they experience seasonal temperature fluctuations and are adapted to drier conditions.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Theraphosidae family. Highly prized and sought-after in the hobby due to its solid, jet-black coloration and docility. Wild exports are prohibited, making captive-bred specimens highly valuable.
Behavior and Habits: Known for a slow, gentle temperament and is often considered the most docile tarantula species. They rarely flick urticating hairs and prefer retreating to their hide rather than defending themselves. They do not web extensively, making them excellent display animals.
Morphology: A large terrestrial tarantula, females can reach a leg span of 16–18 cm. Following a molt, they display a rich, obsidian-black color that softens to charcoal-grey over time. Females are exceptionally long-lived, reaching up to 30 years in captivity, whereas males have a much shorter lifespan.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Provide a terrestrial terrarium (minimum 40x30 cm base). The substrate should consist of a dry-to-semi-damp mixture of topsoil and sand, at least 15 cm deep to allow burrowing. Include a half-buried cork bark hide and a heavy water dish.
Lighting and Heating: No lighting is required. Keep at normal room temperatures of 22–25°C. Prevent winter temperatures from dropping below 16°C. Avoid high summer temperatures; they will retreat into their burrows to escape excessive heat.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain moderate humidity between 55–60%. They dislike wet substrate; keep the bulk of the soil dry. A fresh water dish must always be available. Overflow the bowl slightly once a month to create a small damp patch.
Feeding and Supplementation: Growth rate is exceptionally slow. Feed slings pinhead crickets, and adults 1–2 large crickets or roaches per month. They are known for going on prolonged fasts (from 6 to 12 months) before molting, which is completely normal.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Keep housed individually. For breeding, introduce the male carefully to a well-fed female, and use a divider if the female displays aggressive posture.
Health and Common Diseases: Extremely hardy. The main risk is overwatering the enclosure, which can cause lung distress and respiratory issues. Fasting is normal; do not force feed or increase humidity if they stop eating.

Perfil de invertebrados terrestres
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Grammostola pulchra requires a well-balanced diet to maintain optimal health and vitality in captivity. Its feeding regimen should closely mimic its natural dietary habits in the wild, including proper vitamin and mineral supplementation. Providing appropriate portion sizes and maintaining a regular feeding schedule are crucial for its digestive health.
- Tamanho adulto
- 18 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Grammostola pulchra has adapted to a specific lifestyle that dictates the type of habitat it requires. It relies heavily on proper environmental enrichment, climbing structures, or burrowing substrates depending on its natural adaptations. Creating a terrarium that reflects these requirements allows the animal to thrive and minimizes captivity-related stress.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- The activity pattern of Grammostola pulchra is largely dictated by its natural rhythms and environmental cues. Knowing whether it is diurnal, nocturnal, or crepuscular is essential for providing appropriate lighting and heating schedules. Proper management of these cycles ensures the animal remains active, healthy, and exhibits natural foraging behaviors.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- Solitary and highly cannibalistic. Must be housed individually at all times, as they will readily attack and consume other tarantulas, including members of their own species, regardless of the enclosure size.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- The reproductive cycle of Grammostola pulchra involves specific environmental triggers such as temperature and humidity changes. Successful breeding requires careful conditioning of both the male and female to ensure they are healthy. Once eggs or live young are produced, specialized care and incubation are often necessary for a high success rate.
- Venenoso
- Yes
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- Handling Grammostola pulchra should always be approached with care and respect for the animal's boundaries. Frequent or improper handling can lead to significant stress, defensive behaviors, or even injury to both the keeper and the pet. It is best to keep handling sessions brief and allow the animal to settle into its enclosure afterward.
- Brumação
- Não obrigatório
- Brumation in Grammostola pulchra is a natural physiological process often triggered by seasonal drops in temperature and daylight. During this period, the animal will significantly reduce its activity, appetite, and metabolic rate. Keepers must carefully monitor temperatures and hydration to ensure a safe and healthy brumation cycle.
- Muda
- Regular
- The molting process is a critical time for Grammostola pulchra as it sheds its old skin to accommodate growth and renewal. Proper humidity levels and access to a humid hide are essential to prevent retained sheds, especially around the toes and tail. Careful observation during this period helps prevent complications and ensures a smooth shedding cycle.
