Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the dry grasslands, shrublands, and plains of the Gran Chaco region in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. It is a terrestrial and opportunistic burrowing spider that shelters under natural debris or inside deep retreats to survive seasonal temperature shifts and droughts.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A member of the Theraphosidae family, widely known as Grammostola pulchripes. It represents a large-bodied line of New World tarantulas celebrated for their hardiness and structural adaptation to semi-arid ecosystems.
Behavior and Habits: Remarkably docile, calm, and slow-moving. It rarely exhibits threat displays or bites. Its primary defense mechanism involves flicking urticating hairs from its abdomen. It displays burrowing activity, actively moving substrate to construct and modify its shelter.
Morphology: Females are highly robust, reaching a leg span of 20-22 cm, and are exceptionally long-lived, often exceeding 20 years. Males are smaller, slimmer, and have shorter lifespans, developing tibial hooks and emboli on their pedipalps upon reaching maturity.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a wide, low terrestrial enclosure (minimum 60x45x30 cm). The drop risk is the primary hazard; the height must be restricted, and a deep layer of dry peat moss or coconut fiber substrate should be provided. Include a curved piece of cork bark as a hide.
Lighting and Heating: Keep temperatures between 22 and 28°C. They easily tolerate standard room temperatures without supplemental heating. Avoid heating pads or lamps that can overheat the enclosure. Low ambient light is sufficient.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain moderate humidity levels around 50-65%. Keep the substrate dry, but always provide a wide, shallow dish of fresh water for drinking.
Feeding and Supplementation: Carnivorous. Feed on large insects such as Dubia roaches, crickets, and locusts. Adult females frequently go on long fasts lasting several months before a molt. Remove any live prey if the spider seals its burrow entrance.
Compatibility: Strictly solitary. Do not house multiple specimens together, as tarantulas are highly cannibalistic. Keep individually in a dedicated enclosure.
Health and Common Diseases: Falls are highly lethal due to the risk of abdominal rupture. Handle only close to the ground, if at all. Urticating hairs cause skin irritation and can lead to severe ocular inflammation if they contact the eyes.

Perfil de invertebrados terrestres
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- The Chaco Golden Knee is an opportunistic ambush predator that feeds on a wide variety of insects, such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms. Adult specimens are robust enough to occasionally consume larger prey like hornworms or even appropriately sized frozen-thawed pinky mice. Providing them with a fresh, shallow water dish is just as critical as offering a consistent supply of varied live prey.
- Tamanho adulto
- 20 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- A very large, docile tarantula with distinct golden striping on its leg joints. As a highly adapted terrestrial species, the Grammostola Pulchripes utilizes its environment to the fullest. This lifestyle requires a terrarium setup that mimics such conditions, focusing on floor space and hiding spots. Proper enrichment should be provided to allow for natural behaviors.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- The Grammostola Pulchripes is predominantly nocturnal in its natural habitat. It typically exhibits its highest levels of activity during the night, emerging to forage for food and explore its surroundings while resting during the alternating periods to conserve energy and avoid predators.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This species is renowned for its extremely calm and docile temperament, making it one of the most popular tarantulas for beginners and enthusiasts alike. They are primarily terrestrial and love to excavate shallow burrows or utilize provided cork bark hides. While generally slow-moving and relaxed, they will flick urticating hairs from their abdomen if they feel significantly disturbed or threatened.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Breeding these tarantulas requires introducing a mature male to a receptive female's enclosure, taking great care to prevent the female from cannibalizing the male. If successful, the female will construct a large silk egg sac containing hundreds of individual eggs, which she meticulously guards and rotates. After several weeks, the spiderlings emerge, requiring tiny fruit flies or pinhead crickets as their first meals.
- Venenoso
- Yes
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- When it comes to interactions, the Grammostola Pulchripes is generally considered docile. It tolerates occasional handling well, though sessions should be kept short to minimize stress.
- Brumação
- Regarding seasonal cycles, brumation is no for the Grammostola Pulchripes. It does not require a brumation period and should be maintained at consistent optimal temperatures year-round to ensure proper digestion and health.
- Muda
- Regular
- The Grammostola Pulchripes requires moderate humidity conditions for a successful molt. Maintaining standard ambient humidity is usually sufficient, though a slight bump in humidity during the shed cycle can be beneficial.
