Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Timon lepidus is native to southwestern Europe, including Spain, Portugal, southern France, and extreme northwestern Italy (Liguria). It inhabits sunny, dry biotopes such as scrublands, olive groves, dry stone walls, and rocky hillsides.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A member of the Lacertidae family, originally described by Daudin in 1802. It has several distinct subspecies, with Timon lepidus lepidus being the nominate form. Genetic studies show regional variations across the Iberian Peninsula.
Behavior and Habits: Active, diurnal, and highly intelligent. They are alert baskers that spend morning hours heating up before hunting. While quick to flee in the wild, they adapt well to captivity and can become remarkably calm and interactive.
Morphology: This is the largest lizard native to Europe, with mature males reaching 60 to 80 cm in total length. They possess a heavy, muscular head, a bright green or yellow-green dorsal pattern overlayed with black reticulations, and brilliant blue ocelli on their sides.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: An adult requires a large terrestrial enclosure measuring at least 150x60x60 cm. Provide a deep substrate mixture of topsoil and play sand. Decorate with heavy, secure rocks, cork bark logs, and climbing branches to create a complex environment.
Lighting and Heating: Requires high-intensity lighting. Establish a hot basking zone of 38-42°C using halogen flood lamps, alongside a cool area of 24-26°C. High-output T5 linear UVB (10% or 12%) is critical for long-term health and growth.
Humidity and Hydration: Keep ambient humidity around 40-50%. A shallow water dish must be provided at all times. Additionally, include a humid hide box packed with damp moss or coco peat to assist with clean skin sheds.
Feeding and Supplementation: Opportunistic omnivores. The bulk of their diet should consist of gut-loaded insects (roaches, crickets, locusts), supplemented with snails, occasional pinky mice, soft fruits, and calcium-dusted leafy greens.
Compatibility: Adult males are highly territorial and will fight aggressively, often resulting in severe injuries or death. House them individually or as a male-female pair, provided the enclosure is large enough to allow separation.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to metabolic bone disease (MBD) if UVB output degrades or calcium is neglected. Can suffer from obesity if fed too many fatty prey items, and internal parasites which require veterinary screening.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- As an omnivore, this species requires a balanced diet of both animal protein and plant matter. Offer a mix of live gut-loaded insects alongside fresh leafy greens and vegetables. Regular supplementation with calcium and vitamins ensures optimal health and growth.
- Tamanho adulto
- 60 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- This species leads a terrestrial lifestyle, spending the vast majority of its time on the ground. Its enclosure should prioritize floor space over height, featuring a deep substrate for digging. Providing various ground-level hides and rocks will encourage natural foraging behaviors.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- This species is strictly diurnal, meaning it is highly active during the daylight hours. It requires intense full-spectrum UVB lighting and a proper basking spot to regulate its metabolism. During the night, it will retreat to a secure hide to sleep in complete darkness.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This species tends to be skittish and fast-moving, often relying on flight to escape perceived threats. They generally prefer to be left alone and can become easily stressed by sudden movements. It is best to appreciate their active behaviors from a distance as a display animal.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species reproduces by laying eggs, which require specific conditions to hatch successfully. Females will seek out a suitable nesting site with moist substrate to deposit their clutch. Eggs must be carefully removed and incubated at the correct temperature and humidity levels.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- This species is generally tolerant of handling once it has become accustomed to its keeper. Interactions should be kept brief and positive to avoid causing unnecessary stress. Always support their body fully and allow them to walk freely on your hands.
- Brumação
- In the wild, this species undergoes a period of brumation during the cooler winter months. In captivity, healthy adults can be safely cooled to simulate this natural resting phase. During this time, they will eat less and remain largely inactive until temperatures are raised.
- Muda
- Regular
- Like most lizards, this species sheds its skin in patches rather than in one continuous piece. Maintaining proper humidity levels and providing a humid hide are crucial to prevent stuck shed. Keepers should monitor the toes and tail tip closely to ensure all old skin is successfully removed.
