Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Pelomedusa subrufa is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from Senegal to Somalia and South Africa, with populations also found in Madagascar and Yemen. It inhabits shallow, slow-moving, or temporary water bodies such as marshes, seasonal rain pools, ponds, and slow streams. The species is highly adapted to arid periods, during which it will burrow deep into the mud of drying riverbeds to estivate for several months until the rains return.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belonging to the family Pelomedusidae and the genus Pelomedusa. It is a pleurodiran (side-necked) turtle, meaning it retracts its head by folding the neck horizontally under the rim of the carapace rather than pulling it straight back. Modern mitochondrial DNA analyses have identified several cryptic species within the genus, though Pelomedusa subrufa remains the definitive type species in the pet trade.
Behavior and Habits: Semi-aquatic, highly active, and a voracious predator. It spends most of its time swimming and foraging in water but frequently climbs onto emergent rocks or logs to bask in the sun to regulate its body temperature. It has an aggressive temperament towards other turtles and is known for its active, bottom-dwelling hunting style, stalking prey with high persistence.
Morphology: Features a flattened, oval-shaped carapace that ranges in color from olive-brown to dark brown or black, lacking a central keel in adults. The plastron is typically light yellow or brown. The head is large, wide, and flat, with upward-pointing eyes and two small barbels underneath the chin. Limbs are greyish and heavily webbed. Adults reach a carapace length of 20 to 30 cm.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: An aquaterrarium of at least 120x50x50 cm is required for an adult specimen. Provide roughly 70% water area (water depth of 20-30 cm) and 30% easily accessible land area via a stable ramp. The tank bottom can be left bare or covered with fine sand. A powerful canister filter is mandatory to manage the high biological waste produced by this carnivorous species.
Lighting and Heating: Water temperature must be maintained at 24-26°C (75-79°F) using a protected aquarium heater to prevent burns. Position a heat lamp over the land area to create a basking spot of 32-35°C (90-95°F). A T5 linear 10.0 UVB bulb must be installed over the basking area and run for 12 hours daily to ensure proper calcium absorption and prevent shell soft spots.
Humidity and Hydration: Being semi-aquatic, they hydrate directly in the water. Relative humidity in the air space should be around 50-60%. Ensure proper ventilation in the enclosure to prevent cold drafts and stagnant damp air, which can lead to eye swelling and respiratory infections.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of live or frozen insects (crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms), earthworms, snails, fresh shrimp, mussels, small whole fish (silversides), and high-quality commercial carnivorous turtle pellets. Avoid feeding processed meats. Dust food with calcium and vitamin D3 twice weekly for juveniles and once weekly for adults.
Compatibility: Must be housed individually. They are highly aggressive and territorial; keeping multiple specimens together (even of the same species) will result in severe territorial fighting and biting, often leading to missing limbs or tails. Any fish housed in the aquatic section will be hunted and eaten.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to shell rot and fungal skin infections if the water quality is poor or if the basking spot is inadequate. Other common issues include metabolic bone disease (MBD) from lack of UVB, and respiratory infections due to sudden temperature differences between the water and air. Weekly partial water changes are critical to maintain hygiene.
