Long-tailed lizard
Takydromus sexlineatus
The long-tailed grass lizard from Asia thrives in vertically oriented 60x45x60 cm terrariums full of tall grasses. It requires low-intensity UVB, moderate humidity, and regular feedings of small insects.

Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Takydromus sexlineatus, commonly known as the long-tailed lizard or six-striped long-tailed lizard, is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia. Its distribution range includes northeastern India, southern China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, and several Indonesian islands such as Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. It primarily inhabits open environments rich in herbaceous vegetation, such as overgrown grasslands, rainforest edges, agricultural fields (especially rice paddies), and humid shrubby areas.
Taxonomy and Genetics: It belongs to the class Reptilia, order Squamata, family Lacertidae, and genus Takydromus. The specific name sexlineatus refers to the six light and dark longitudinal lines running along the body. Genetics and morphology of this genus show an extreme adaptation to grass-dwelling life; the extremely light body and thread-like tail allow the lizard to distribute its weight over grass blades and move quickly.
Behavior and Habits: It is a diurnal, active, and highly agile reptile. It spends the day climbing grass stems and low shrubs to bask in the sun and hunt small insects. It has a peaceful and non-aggressive temperament. If threatened, it relies on its incredible speed to escape or on camouflage. Like many other lizards, it can practice caudal autotomy, voluntarily detaching its tail to distract predators; the tail will regrow over time.
Morphology: The extraordinary morphological feature is the tail, which can reach a length equal to three or four times that of the body (snout-to-vent length of about 6-8 cm, for a total length up to 30-35 cm / 12 to 14 inches). The body is extremely elongated, slender, and light, with feet equipped with long, clawed toes for climbing grass. Dorsal coloration is typically brown or bronze with green, white, and black lateral bands.

Terrarium Setup: For a small group (one male and two females), a vertically oriented terrarium measuring at least 60x45x60 cm (approx. 24x18x24 inches) is required. The setup must include an abundance of thin branches, live long-stemmed plants, and broad leaves (such as pothos, sansevieria, and ornamental grasses) to allow climbing and provide hides. The substrate must retain moisture, such as coconut fiber or peat mixed with moss.
Lighting and Heating: Being a diurnal and heliophilic reptile, it requires intense lighting and access to UVB rays. A 5% UVB lamp must be installed and kept on for 12 hours a day. The thermal gradient must provide a basking spot (warm zone) at 32-35°C (90°F - 95°F) created by a protected spot bulb, and a daytime ambient temperature in the cool zone of 24-27°C (75°F - 81°F). At night, temperatures can drop to 20-22°C (68°F - 72°F).
Humidity and Hydration: Relative humidity must be maintained around 60-70%, with peaks of 80% in the morning. It is recommended to mist the terrarium once or twice a day with dechlorinated water. These lizards prefer to drink water droplets that deposit on leaves rather than from a standing water dish; daily misting is therefore crucial to prevent chronic dehydration.
Feeding and Supplementation: It is a strictly insectivorous species. In captivity, it must be fed daily with live insects of appropriate size (no larger than the space between its eyes): micro-crickets, fruit flies, small lateralis roaches, small silkworms, and occasionally mealworms. Food must be dusted with pure calcium three times a week, calcium with D3 twice a week, and a multivitamin once a week.
Compatibility: It is a very peaceful lizard that can be kept in small harems (one male with two or three females). Under no circumstances should two males be kept in the same terrarium, as they would engage in continuous and violent territorial fights for dominance. It can coexist with other peaceful lizard species of similar size that share the same environmental parameters.
Health and Common Diseases: The most common pathology is Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD), resulting from a lack of UVB rays or insufficient calcium supplementation in the diet. Tail autotomy is a traumatic event that, although natural, requires hygienic attention to prevent secondary bacterial infections on the open wound before regeneration. Avoid ever grabbing the lizard by the tail.

Perfil de réptil
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- This species is strictly insectivorous and relies on a varied diet of live insects. Offer appropriately sized crickets, dubia roaches, and mealworms to ensure proper nutrition. All feeder insects should be gut-loaded and regularly dusted with calcium and multivitamin supplements.
- Tamanho adulto
- 30 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Arboreal
- This species exhibits a semi-arboreal lifestyle, utilizing both the ground and lower vegetation. The enclosure should offer a balanced mix of horizontal floor space and vertical climbing opportunities. They will actively forage on the ground but seek safety and basking spots on branches.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Diurnal
- This species is strictly diurnal, meaning it is highly active during the daylight hours. It requires intense full-spectrum UVB lighting and a proper basking spot to regulate its metabolism. During the night, it will retreat to a secure hide to sleep in complete darkness.
- Socialidade
- Solitary
- This species tends to be skittish and fast-moving, often relying on flight to escape perceived threats. They generally prefer to be left alone and can become easily stressed by sudden movements. It is best to appreciate their active behaviors from a distance as a display animal.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species reproduces by laying eggs, which require specific conditions to hatch successfully. Females will seek out a suitable nesting site with moist substrate to deposit their clutch. Eggs must be carefully removed and incubated at the correct temperature and humidity levels.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Due to their fragile nature and fast speed, handling should be kept to an absolute minimum. They are best treated as display animals, as handling can cause severe stress or physical injury. If movement is necessary, coaxing them into a container is the safest method.
- Brumação
- This tropical species does not undergo true brumation and requires consistent temperatures year-round. While they may show a slight decrease in activity during winter, their enclosure parameters should not be drastically altered. Heating and lighting must be maintained at standard levels to ensure their health.
- Muda
- Regular
- Like most lizards, this species sheds its skin in patches rather than in one continuous piece. Maintaining proper humidity levels and providing a humid hide are crucial to prevent stuck shed. Keepers should monitor the toes and tail tip closely to ensure all old skin is successfully removed.
