Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to Southeast Asia, ranging across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. They inhabit warm, shallow freshwater bodies, including flooded rice paddies, marshes, slow-flowing canals, and ponds with soft muddy bottoms and dense vegetation.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Geoemydidae. The genus Cuora includes several box turtles; Cuora amboinensis is divided into four recognized subspecies (e.g., C. a. amboinensis, C. a. kamaroma) based on shell shape and facial striping patterns. The genetic profile is well-documented.

Behavior and Habits: More aquatic than most other box turtles, especially during its juvenile phase. They split their time between swimming and foraging on land. They possess a flexible hinge on the plastron, enabling them to pull the shell shut tightly for protection against predators.

Morphology: Features a highly domed, dark brown to black carapace with a light yellow plastron marked with dark spots. The head is black with distinctive, bright yellow stripes running along the sides of the face and down the neck. Adult specimens average between 20 and 25 centimeters in length.

Terrarium Setup: An aquaterrarium of at least 120x60x50 cm is recommended, split into a 60% water area (20-30 cm deep) and a 40% land area. The land area should have a humid substrate of coconut fiber or sphagnum moss and low hides. Sturdy ramps must be provided for easy exit from the water.

Lighting and Heating: The land area requires a basking spot heated to 30-32 degrees Celsius (86-90°F) using a basking bulb, alongside a 5.0% UVB lamp for 12 hours daily. Water temperature must be maintained between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius. Never let the ambient temperature drop below 20 degrees.

Humidity and Hydration: Demands high relative humidity between 70% and 85% to prevent respiratory illness and eye irritation. Mist the terrestrial portion daily. Efficient filtration (such as an external canister filter) and regular water changes are required to keep the water clean and odorless.

Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous. Juveniles lean towards animal protein (crickets, earthworms, shrimp, fish), whereas adults consume a high proportion of plant matter (dandelion, romaine, aquatic plants, and occasional fruit). Dust the food with calcium and vitamin D3 twice a week.

Compatibility: Can be housed in pairs or small groups of one male and multiple females in very spacious enclosures. Males can be aggressive pursuers during breeding seasons, so monitor group dynamics closely and provide ample hiding spaces to prevent stress.

Health and Common Diseases: Prone to respiratory infections if exposed to cold drafts or low temperatures. Fungal skin infections and shell rot are common in poorly filtered tanks. The hinged plastron must be inspected periodically for trapped substrate or mechanical injuries.
