Eastern Box Turtle

Geographical Origin and Habitat: This subspecies is native to the eastern United States, ranging from Maine to Michigan, south to Florida and Texas. It inhabits moist deciduous forests, open woodlands, wet meadows, floodplains, and the edges of swamps or slow streams. Although a terrestrial turtle, it spends considerable time soaked in mud or damp leaf litter to regulate temperature and hydration.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the family Emydidae, genus Terrapene. Terrapene carolina carolina is the nominate subspecies. Genetically, it displays remarkable phenotypic plasticity, with wide variations in color patterns even within the same geographic lineage. The species is threatened in the wild by habitat fragmentation and road mortality, and is protected under strict conservation laws.

Behavior and Habits: Primarily diurnal and terrestrial. During hot, dry weather, it remains hidden under forest leaf litter, becoming highly active immediately after summer rains to forage for worms and insects. In the winter months, it undergoes a deep hibernation (brumation) by burying itself deep in the soil, which is essential to trigger spring breeding behaviors.

Morphology: Features a highly arched, domed carapace measuring 15-20 centimeters (6-8 inches) in length. The plastron is equipped with a flexible transverse hinge, allowing the turtle to pull its head and limbs fully inside and seal its shell shut to protect itself from predators. Coloration is highly variable, featuring bright yellow, orange, or red patterns on a dark brown or black base.

Terrarium Setup: Hatchlings can be housed in large indoor enclosures (minimum 120x60 cm / 4x2 feet), but adults benefit greatly from secure outdoor pens (at least 2x2 meters) with live grass, shrubs, and shaded areas. The substrate must be soft and moist, composed of topsoil, peat moss, and bark mulch at least 15-20 cm deep to allow burrowing. Provide dry hides and piles of leaf litter.

Lighting and Heating: Outdoors they rely on natural sunlight. Indoors, maintain a temperature gradient of 22-26°C (71.6°F - 78.8°F) with a basking spot of 28-30°C (82.4°F - 86°F) using a heat bulb. Night temperatures should drop to 18-20°C (64.4°F - 68°F). A high-quality 5.0% or 10.0% UVB bulb is mandatory for 12 hours daily to support bone health.

Humidity and Hydration: Requires moderate to high humidity, between 60% and 80%. Keep the substrate damp but not soggy. A shallow, wide water dish must be provided where the turtle can easily soak to rehydrate and defecate. Water depth should not exceed the turtle's chin level and must be changed daily.

Feeding and Supplementation: An omnivore whose dietary preferences shift with age (juveniles are more carnivorous, adults consume more plant matter). The ideal diet is 50% animal protein (earthworms, snails, crickets, roaches, mealworms, occasional high-quality wet cat food) and 50% vegetation (chicory, dandelion, endive, berries, melon). Supplement with calcium and D3 twice a week.

Compatibility: Can be kept in small groups (one male and two females) in spacious setups. Do not house multiple males together, as they are territorial and will fight aggressively, leading to injuries. Do not cohabitate with exotic species or aquatic turtles requiring different parameters.

Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to metabolic bone disease (MBD) from lack of calcium/UVB, respiratory infections from cold drafts, and aural abscesses (middle ear infections) due to vitamin A deficiency or poor water hygiene. Perform annual fecal checks to monitor for intestinal parasites.
