Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to the tropical Central Pacific Ocean, specifically endemic to the waters of Western Samoa and American Samoa. It inhabits shallow, highly sunlit outer reefs, reef flats, and rocky shorelines at depths ranging from 1 to 10 meters, where strong wave action stimulates algae growth.

Taxonomy and Morphology: A member of the Blenniidae family, subfamily Salariinae. It features a slender, elongated, cylindrical body that is entirely scaleless and coated in protective mucus. The eyes are large, highly mobile, and set high on the head. It is a tiny species, reaching a maximum total length of only 4.5 centimeters.

Social Behavior: It is a peaceful, shy, and mostly solitary fish. It spends the majority of its day perched on rocks, corals, or other hard substrates, observing its surroundings. When approached or startled, it retreats backward into tight rock crevices or holes, leaving only its face visible to potential predators.

Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: It exhibits a dark reddish-brown body color, accented by faint lighter longitudinal stripes and a distinctive dark diagonal stripe across the snout. There is no major sexual dimorphism in coloration, though adult males can grow slightly larger than mature females.

Aquarium Setup: Suitable for small setups starting at 50 to 60 liters. Provide a complex rockwork arrangement with plenty of live rock to encourage microalgae growth and create tight caves and crevices for hiding. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is absolutely essential, as this species is a skilled jumper.

Diet and Feeding: Primarily herbivorous. In the wild, it feeds by scraping microalgae and organic biofilm off rocks. In captivity, feed a diet rich in vegetable matter, such as spirulina flakes, sheets of nori, and sinking herbivore pellets. It can be offered frozen mysis or brine shrimp occasionally as a supplement.

Water Quality: Keep standard reef parameters stable: temperature between 23 and 27 °C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity between 1.020 and 1.025. Standard marine filtration and moderate water movement are necessary to maintain low levels of nitrate and phosphate for long-term health.

Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef safe and peaceful with most open-water fish. It will not harm corals, clams, or ornamental shrimps. However, it can show territorial behavior toward other Ecsenius species or similarly shaped benthic fish. Best kept as a single specimen in smaller aquariums.

Aquarium Breeding: Oviparous. Female deposits adhesive eggs in a cave or shell, which are then guarded and fanned by the male until they hatch. Raising the larvae is exceptionally difficult due to their microscopic size and the need for specialized planktonic live feeds.

Risks and Diseases: The primary risk in home aquariums is starvation in newly established, sterile tanks that lack natural algae growth. Although relatively resistant to external parasites due to its thick body mucus, it can be sensitive to copper-based medications since it lacks scales.
