Candy Stripe Pleco (L015)

Peckoltia vittata

One of the most popular Peckoltias, the 'Candy Stripe' (L015) enchants with its thick brown bands on a golden yellow background. Very docile, it is an excellent guest for community aquariums.

Description de l'espèce

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Exclusive to the lower and middle basin of the Xingu River and Tapajós River (Brazil). Often swims close to the bottom of clear and turbulent rapids, hiding in the maze of stone slabs and strong roots anchored to the bottom.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Candy Striped Pleco (L015 / Peckoltia vittata). The term "vittata" means ribboned/banded. Armored and robust, with a prominent eye and soft belly (devoid of bony plates). Among the most sold "Tiger Plecos" on the European market.
Social Behavior: Mainly scavenger and guardian of its daytime hideout. Although passive towards the top of the aquarium, it angrily drives its conspecifics away from the nocturnal den with its powerful tail. Better not to host multiple males in the same tank.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Light yellow tending towards golden, furrowed by showy "ribbons" (vittata) or solid vertical black bands on the body and head. The male differs in adulthood by the development of well-visible spiny teeth (odontodes) on the flanks and pectoral fins.

Soins, reproduction et cohabitation

Aquarium Setup: Grows up to 14 cm (5.5 inches), needs 100 cm (40 inches) aquariums. Rocky or "river manifold" setup with roots (which it needs to scrape for digestive purposes) and multiple coconut tubes or dens, strictly blind and with a single entrance.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Eats loricariid tablets, fish or shrimp slices, soft zucchini. A diet based solely on algae or vegetable wafers is incorrect and will cause chronic wasting. Always supplement with frozen bloodworms.
Water Quality: Rheophilic species: demands strong currents, enormous recirculation, and oxygen saturation (oversized filter + spraybar). Intolerant to cold waters: keep stably at 26-28°C (79-82°F).
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Excels if kept together with lively mid and top layer companions that do not enter its benthic realm (Hemiodus, large Tetras and docile South American Cichlids like Geophagus). Larger related Loricariids (e.g. Panaque) are not recommended.
Aquarium Breeding: Possible in a mature aquarium. Stimulate reproduction by lowering pH and temperature values with small and repeated water changes. The male tirelessly tends the female, trapping her for hours in the nest. Large eggs hatch in a week.
Risks and Diseases: Very resistant to common aquarium pathologies. The primary damage it incurs is the breaking of the hard ray of the pectoral fins if handled or carelessly entangled with tightly woven cloth nets.

Profil de poisson

Tempérament
Semi-aggressive
The temperament of Peckoltia vittata is largely peaceful, especially towards tank mates. While they mind their own business mostly, they may become defensive during specific periods. Providing visual barriers and adequate space mitigates most behavioral issues.
Régime alimentaire
Omnivore
Peckoltia vittata is primarily omnivorous and enjoys a diverse diet. In captivity, they eagerly accept high-quality prepared foods, and appropriate frozen or live foods. Providing a varied menu ensures they receive all necessary nutrients for vibrant colors and health.
Espérance de vie
8-12 years
Taille adulte
14 cm
Ratio des sexes
Group
Maintaining a proper sex ratio of mixed group is advisable for this species. Males tend to be visually distinct from females in certain aspects, making sexing possible in mature specimens. In breeding setups, close monitoring is essential to prevent excessive harassment.
Fréquence d'alimentation
Twice daily
It is recommended to feed Peckoltia vittata moderate portions once a day. Only offer an amount they can completely consume within a few minutes to prevent water fouling. Occasional fasting days can also be beneficial for their digestive system.
Charge biologique
Medium
The bioload produced by Peckoltia vittata is moderate due to their medium size and metabolic rate. They require robust filtration to keep water parameters stable and pristine. Regular water changes are highly recommended to ensure their optimal health.
Courant
Stagnant
This fish prefers moderate water currents that mimic its natural habitat. Proper water flow is crucial for maintaining adequate oxygenation levels. Position filter outlets or powerheads carefully to provide both flowing and calmer resting areas.
Risque de saut
Yes
Peckoltia vittata poses a low risk of jumping from the aquarium if startled. It is strictly advised to keep a secure, tight-fitting lid on the enclosure at all times. Extra care should be exercised during tank maintenance to prevent unexpected escapes.
Reproduction
Oviparous
Breeding Peckoltia vittata in captivity is challenging and requires specific water parameters. They are cave spawners and often exhibit fascinating courtship behaviors. Providing ample suitable structures will significantly increase the survival rate of the fry.
Compatibilité et compagnons
With caution
This species is generally peaceful and makes a specific addition to a home aquarium. They can be housed with other compatible species that occupy different water levels. Caution should be taken when selecting tank mates to avoid any conflicts.
Niveau dans le bac
Bottom
These fish predominantly occupy the bottom levels of the aquarium. They enjoy exploring their surroundings and often interact with the tank decor. Ensuring sufficient space in their preferred zone is absolutely important for their well-being.
