Species description
This species originates from South America, where it grows along the humid banks of rivers, marshes, and temporarily flooded soils. It is accustomed to living both in emersed environments with high humidity and completely submerged during seasonal floods, showing excellent tolerance to environmental fluctuations. It belongs to the family Rubiaceae, a plant family uncommon in the aquarium hobby but which includes well-known terrestrial plants such as coffee. The specific affinity with 'kuntzei' is indicated by 'cf.' (compare to) due to uncertainties in the exact cataloging of aquatic species of the genus Diodia. It is an erect or prostrate stem plant.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Prefers temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It adapts to neutral or slightly acidic pH values (6.0 - 7.5) and requires medium-low water hardness to prevent stem rigidity and leaf fragility. The main risk is the loss of basal leaves due to poor light penetration or macroelement deficiencies. Additionally, the stems can rot at the base if planted too close to each other, limiting water flow.

- Midground, Background
Best utilized in the midground or background depending on how it is trimmed. Its unique, stiff, and needle-like leaves offer a distinct texture that stands out in the aquascape. It should be planted in an open area with unobstructed, high-intensity lighting.
Features very stiff, narrow, needle-like leaves that grow in opposing pairs along a rigid stem. The leaves are typically a bright, fresh green and have a somewhat spiky appearance. Its rigid structure makes it quite unique among aquatic stem plants.
Exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate when provided with optimal conditions, including strong light and CO2 injection. Its vertical growth is steady, and it requires regular maintenance to prevent it from reaching the surface too quickly. Without CO2, its growth is significantly impaired.
Diodia cf. kuntzei performs well in a medium-grade substrate that offers a balanced supply of essential nutrients. A standard fine gravel enriched with root tabs or a commercial aqua soil creates an ideal growing foundation. It requires about 4 centimeters of substrate to anchor its stems and promote a healthy root network. The roots steadily draw in micronutrients from the bed, complementing foliar feeding and encouraging vigorous side shoots.
Demands consistent and thorough liquid fertilization to maintain its vibrant green color and structural integrity. Adequate levels of iron and trace elements are crucial to prevent the leaves from washing out. A well-rounded dosing schedule will keep the plant robust.
Greatly benefits from a nutrient-rich substrate like aquasoil, which supports strong root development. While it absorbs nutrients well through its leaves, a fertile root zone provides stability and a secondary nutrient source. Root tabs can be used to boost growth in established tanks.
Tolerates trimming well, which is necessary to maintain a bushy shape and control its height. Cutting the tops will encourage the stem to produce lateral shoots. The stiff stems require sharp scissors to ensure a clean cut without crushing the tissue.
Propagated easily through stem cuttings. Simply snip the healthy top portions and replant them directly into the substrate. Ensure adequate spacing between the stems to allow light to reach the lower foliage.
A demanding plant that requires stable, optimal conditions to thrive. It is sensitive to shading and will lose its lower leaves if light penetration is poor. It also demands high CO2 levels and clean, well-circulated water to prevent algae issues on its stiff leaves.
Serves as a striking textural accent in the midground or background. Its stiff, needle-like foliage provides an excellent contrast to softer, broad-leaved plants or fine mosses. It is a fantastic choice for adding structural diversity to a planted aquarium.
