Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region, from East Africa and the Red Sea to Hawaii, the Philippines, Australia, and French Polynesia. It primarily inhabits very shallow coastal environments, such as rocky tide pools, reef flats, intertidal zones, and sandy beach shores.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Diogenidae. It is characterized by an oversized, heavily calcified left claw (cheliped) used as an operculum or shield to block the opening of its gastropod shell when retracted inside for defense. It grows to a maximum size of approximately 3 centimeters.
Social Behavior: A peaceful, highly active, and busy scavenger that works during both day and night. It spends its time grazing on algae covering live rock and foraging in the sand. It can show territorial behavior toward other hermit crabs if food or empty shell options are limited.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The walking legs feature prominent, contrasting bands of black (or dark brown) and white, giving it a zebra-like appearance. The large left claw is solid white with dark base colors, while the eyes are bright blue on orange stalks. No obvious external sexual dimorphism exists, and it is an excellent algae consumer.

Tank Setup: Suitable for marine reef aquariums of 30-40 liters (10 gallons) or larger. Provide plenty of established live rock to facilitate climbing and natural grazing. It is mandatory to provide empty gastropod shells of various sizes on the substrate to allow for growth and molting.
Diet and Feeding: Herbivore and detritivore. It is excellent for controlling nuisance green hair algae, film algae, and cyanobacteria. Accepts sinking bottom-feeder pellets, spirulina tablets, leftover frozen foods (mysis and brine shrimp), and pieces of dried seaweed (nori).
Water Quality: Requires stable reef water parameters: specific gravity (SG) of 1.020-1.025, pH of 8.1-8.4, and a stable temperature between 22°C and 28°C. It is highly sensitive to elevated levels of dissolved organic wastes (nitrates) and has zero tolerance for copper treatments.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe and safe for all coral types. An ideal member of the clean-up crew (CUC). It coexists peacefully with fish and other invertebrates, though it may prey on small live snails (such as Turbo or Astrea) to steal their shells if empty replacement shells are lacking.
Aquarium Breeding: Captive reproduction is extremely difficult and rarely successful in home systems. Spawning releases microscopic zoeal larvae that require specialized planktonic food. Standard mechanical filtration and protein skimmers usually remove the larvae from the water.
Risks and Diseases: The lack of suitable replacement shells causes high stress, mortality, or aggressive behavior towards live snails. Highly sensitive to rapid salinity shifts; a slow drip acclimation is essential to prevent shock, limb loss, or mortality.
