Blueish Hermit Crab
Clibanarius englaucus
This energetic intertidal hermit crab is a phenomenal detritivore for small marine tanks. It tirelessly grazes on filamentous algae and cyanobacteria, requiring varied empty shells to grow.

Artbeschreibung
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Distributed throughout the coastal marine waters of the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific. It primarily inhabits intertidal zones, shallow coral reefs, and rocky tide pools rich in detritus and algae.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the Malacostraca class, Decapoda order, Diogenidae family, genus Clibanarius. Like all hermit crabs, it is characterized by the habit of sheltering its soft, asymmetrical abdomen inside empty gastropod shells.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and gregarious species. It spends its time continuously patrolling the rocky and sandy substrates for food. It plays an important ecological role as a reef scavenger (detritivore).
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features legs that are bluish or grayish-green with yellowish highlights. The claws are similar in size. Sexual dimorphism is not externally visible without specialized microscopic examination.
Pflege, Zucht und Mitbewohner
Tank Setup: Highly suited for small marine aquariums starting from 30-50 liters (8-13 gallons). It is essential to include algae-rich live rock and an assortment of empty shells of various sizes to allow for growth and shedding.
Diet and Feeding: Tireless omnivore and detritivore. It feeds on filamentose algae, diatoms, leftover fish food, and organic detritus. Readily accepts dry sinking pellets, fish flakes, and small pieces of dried nori seaweed.
Water Quality: Stable parameters are required: temperature 22-27°C (72-81°F), pH 8.0-8.4, salinity 1.022-1.025. Adequate levels of calcium and magnesium are needed for shell shedding. Extremely sensitive to copper and osmotic shocks.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe and coral-friendly. It can coexist with most peaceful marine fish and invertebrates. It may fight with other hermit crabs or snails if there is a shortage of suitable empty shells.
Aquarium Breeding: Rearing larvae in home aquariums is extremely difficult. The larvae (zoea) released into the water column are quickly consumed by fish or filtered out by mechanical filtration systems.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is molting failure if the water is depleted of essential trace elements like iodine and calcium. Do not use copper-based medications in the tank, as they are highly lethal to crustaceans.

Wirbelloses Profil
- Diät
- Omnivore
- As a herbivore/scavenger, Clibanarius englaucus plays an active role in consuming various organic matters in its environment. Its diet in captivity should be varied, including specialized pellets, frozen foods, and natural algae or detritus depending on its specific preferences. Regular and balanced feeding is crucial for its health and longevity.
- Ökologische Rolle
- Scavenger
- The primary ecological role of Clibanarius englaucus is acting as a cleaner within the aquarium ecosystem. By constantly foraging, it helps manage waste, uneaten food, or pests, contributing significantly to water quality. Its presence introduces a natural balance and mimics complex biological interactions found in the wild.
- Erwachsenengröße
- 2.5 cm
- Sprungrisiko
- Yes
- The jump or escape risk for Clibanarius englaucus is considered low. Like many active invertebrates, it may attempt to climb out of the water if it feels stressed, threatened, or if water conditions deteriorate. A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen is highly recommended to prevent accidental escapes.
- Stoßempfindlichkeit
- Medium
- Clibanarius englaucus is quite sensitive to sudden shifts in water parameters, particularly salinity, temperature, and pH. It is highly recommended to use a slow drip acclimation method over several hours when introducing it to a new tank. Maintaining stable conditions is vital to prevent stress-induced ailments or mortality.
- Kalzium und Mineralien
- Medium
- To support healthy molting and exoskeleton growth, Clibanarius englaucus requires adequate calcium and trace elements like iodine in the water. Regular water changes with a high-quality salt mix usually provide sufficient levels, but specific supplementation may be necessary in heavily stocked reef tanks. Monitoring calcium and alkalinity ensures proper skeletal development.
- Häutung
- Periodic
- During the molting process, Clibanarius englaucus becomes extremely vulnerable to predators and aggressive tankmates. It will typically retreat to a secure hiding spot until its new exoskeleton hardens. It is important to leave the discarded molt in the tank, as the invertebrate will often consume it to reclaim valuable minerals.
- Reproduktion
- Bubble nest builder
- Breeding Clibanarius englaucus in a home aquarium is incredibly challenging due to its complex reproductive cycle. It typically involves a planktonic larval stage that requires highly specialized foods and precise water conditions to survive. In most standard setups, any spawned larvae will quickly become food for fish and corals.
- Kompatibilität & Tankkameraden
- Peaceful
- When considering tankmates, Clibanarius englaucus is generally compatible with peaceful fish and other similarly sized invertebrates. Since its reef compatibility is rated as 'yes', careful observation is required if kept with delicate corals or smaller ornamental shrimp. Aggressive or large predatory fish should always be avoided to ensure its safety.
