Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lysmata udoi is a relatively recently described marine shrimp native to the tropical waters of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, with populations primarily concentrated along the coast of Brazil and its adjacent oceanic islands. It inhabits shallow rocky reefs and coral reef environments at depths between 2 and 20 meters. It occupies sheltered microhabitats such as cracks in volcanic rocks, cavities within calcareous sponges, and shaded areas under stony coral formations, remaining hidden during the day.
Taxonomy: Belonging to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, infraorder Caridea, family Lysmatidae, and genus Lysmata. The species was formally described to distinguish it from similar members of the peppermint shrimp complex based on specific morphological details of the rostrum and telson, alongside significant genetic differences. It exhibits a simultaneous hermaphroditic reproductive system, common among Lysmata species.
Social Behavior: It is a peaceful, gregarious, and shy species. It is primarily nocturnal, spending the day hidden inside rocky crevices and emerging only after lights are turned off to scavenge the substrate. It plays a useful role in the aquarium by consuming organic detritus, uneaten fish food, and decaying matter. It does not exhibit significant territorial or aggressive behaviors.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body is semi-translucent, decorated with bright red or deep pink longitudinal and transverse stripes that form a distinct geometric network. Due to its simultaneous hermaphroditic nature, there is no external sexual dimorphism; breeding individuals can be recognized by the bright green egg mass carried under the abdomen.

Tank Setup: Suitable for reef aquariums of at least 60 liters. It requires a well-structured live rock layout with plenty of crevices, caves, and shaded areas to hide during daylight hours. Water flow should be moderate to strong. Protect powerhead intakes with mesh covers to prevent these small invertebrates from being drawn in.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous and detritivorous. In captivity, it readily accepts a wide variety of foods: frozen foods (mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped krill), sinking pellets, fish flakes, and organic detritus. It helps maintain a clean substrate. Feed regularly to prevent opportunistic picking at coral polyps when hungry.
Water Quality: Maintain stable marine parameters: temperature between 23 °C and 27 °C, pH 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity (SG) 1.020 to 1.025, and carbonate hardness (KH) of 8 to 12 dKH. Copper must be completely absent. Regularly test and supplement calcium and iodine levels to support successful molting of the exoskeleton.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Very peaceful. An excellent companion for small reef fish and non-aggressive invertebrates. Do not house with predatory species known to prey on crustaceans, such as hawkfish, puffers, triggerfish, large wrasses, or groupers. Can be housed in small groups of the same species without issues.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is highly complex. Although mating between two hermaphroditic individuals and subsequent egg-carrying occur regularly, the newly hatched larvae are pelagic and require specialized rearing tanks without mechanical filtration, alongside specific live micro-foods, to survive.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to rapid changes in salinity and temperature; slow drip acclimation is required during introduction. During the molting phase, the shrimp is extremely vulnerable and must have access to secure hiding spots to avoid injury. A lack of dissolved iodine will lead to fatal incomplete molts.
