Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lysmata multiscissa is a marine shrimp species native to the warm waters of the western Atlantic Ocean and, to a lesser extent, certain tropical coastal areas of the eastern Pacific. It primarily inhabits shallow coral reefs, rocky crevices, ledges, and seagrass beds at depths ranging from 1 to 15 meters. It spends daylight hours hiding deep within caves or dark fissures, emerging mainly at night to forage.
Taxonomy: It belongs to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, family Lysmatidae, and genus Lysmata. It is recognized in the aquarium hobby as a member of the peppermint shrimp complex, famous for their efficiency in consuming pest glass anemones (Aiptasia) and their general scavenger habits.
Social Behavior: It is a peaceful, gregarious shrimp that tolerates the presence of conspecifics well, especially in larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots. It has a shy temperament during the day, becoming active and visible only after dusk. It occasionally exhibits cleaning behaviors toward fish, picking off ectoparasites, though to a lesser extent than Lysmata amboinensis.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body is semi-transparent and covered with characteristic longitudinal and transverse bright red or pink stripes that create a net-like or striped pattern. Like many species in the genus Lysmata, it is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, with each individual possessing functioning male and female reproductive organs, though cross-fertilization is required.

Tank Setup: Requires a mature marine or reef aquarium of at least 40-50 liters. It is extremely intolerant to copper and heavy metals. Adequate levels of calcium and iodine are required in the water to support the regular molting process of the exoskeleton.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Generally reef-safe, though starving specimens may occasionally pinch the polyps of soft corals or zoanthids. It coexists peacefully with non-predatory community fish and other invertebrates. Avoid keeping it with large predators such as lionfish, groupers, hawkfish, and large crabs that will readily prey on it.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding frequently occurs in the aquarium, and individuals can often be seen carrying greenish eggs under their abdomen.
