Geographical Origin and Habitat: Lysmata morelandi is a marine shrimp native to the temperate waters of the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, specifically endemic to the coastal waters of New Zealand and surrounding islands. It inhabits shallow rocky reefs, subtidal crevices, underwater cave walls, and kelp forests, at depths ranging from a few meters down to 40 meters. It seeks out sheltered microhabitats, often found living in close association with large sea urchins, which offer protection from predators.
Taxonomy: Belonging to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, infraorder Caridea, family Lysmatidae, and genus Lysmata. This species is closely related to other temperate and subtropical cleaner shrimp. Like most members of the genus Lysmata, it features a simultaneous hermaphroditic reproductive system, meaning mature individuals function as both male and female at the same time.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and moderately gregarious, often found in pairs or small groups sharing the same rocky shelter or nesting near sea urchins. It acts as a facultative cleaner, removing parasites and dead skin from temperate reef fish visiting its station. It is primarily nocturnal, remaining hidden during the day and active at night.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body displays a reddish-brown to orange-brown base color with darker longitudinal lines on the carapace and transverse bands on the abdomen, providing excellent camouflage against algae-covered rocks. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism because all mature adults possess both male and female reproductive organs.

Tank Setup: Requires a temperate or subtropical marine setup of at least 80 liters. The tank should feature stable rockwork with deep cracks and caves. Introducing large temperate sea urchins (such as Evechinus chloroticus) is highly recommended to replicate its natural symbiotic shelter. Moderate water movement and efficient filtration are required to maintain clear water.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous and detritivorous. In captivity, it feeds on organic detritus, uneaten fish food, and parasites. It readily accepts commercial pellets, flakes, and frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Feed every other day to supplement the natural food sources available within the aquarium.
Water Quality: As a temperate species, maintaining cool water temperatures between 15 °C and 21 °C is critical; prolonged exposure to temperatures above 23 °C can be fatal. Maintain standard marine parameters: pH 8.0 to 8.4, specific gravity (SG) 1.023 to 1.025. Regular iodine and calcium dosing is necessary to facilitate successful molting.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Compatible with peaceful temperate reef fish and non-predatory invertebrates. Do not house with large carnivores such as groupers, wrasses, or hawkfish, which will eat them. It is completely safe for sessile invertebrates and does not harm anemones or corals.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is highly challenging. Although mating and egg production occur frequently between two simultaneous hermaphrodites, rearing the resulting pelagic larvae requires specialized cold-water systems and specific micro-plankton cultures to survive the long larval stages.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is thermal shock from high water temperatures. Like all marine crustaceans, it is highly sensitive to copper-based treatments and elevated levels of ammonia or nitrite. During the molting process, it is extremely vulnerable and must have access to secure hiding places to prevent physical damage.
