Geographical Origin and Habitat: Clibanarius demani is a small marine crustacean widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Western Indo-Pacific, with populations recorded from the Andaman Sea to Singapore, Malaysia, and the Indonesian archipelago. It primarily inhabits coastal tide pools, sandy intertidal flats, rocky shorelines, and shallow lagoons at depths ranging from 0 to 10 meters, showing high temperature tolerance.
Taxonomy: Classified within the Malacostraca class, Decapoda order, and Diogenidae family (left-handed hermit crabs). The specific name was chosen in honor of the Dutch biologist Johannes Govertus de Man for his extensive contributions to carcinology. Like all hermit crabs, it has a soft, asymmetric abdomen protected by discarded gastropod shells.
Social Behavior: It is a peaceful, tireless, and social scavenger. It spends its active hours crawling over live rocks and the sand bed searching for organic detritus and algae. It thrives in large groups and exhibits peaceful social behavior, although minor, non-injurious shell-fights with other hermit crabs may occur over vacant shells.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body displays a cryptic coloration, mostly brownish or greenish with lighter longitudinal stripes on the walking legs, ideal for blending into intertidal rocky surfaces. The claws are similar in size and covered with small granules. There is no external sexual dimorphism; shell selection is based solely on size.

Tank Setup: An ideal inhabitant for small aquariums or nano-reefs starting from 20 liters. The tank setup should include stable live rock formations and a soft sand bed. It is mandatory to keep a continuous supply of empty gastropod shells of various sizes in the tank to allow the hermit crab to change its home after each molting cycle.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger and herbivore. It performs an excellent cleanup role, consuming nuisance hair algae, diatoms, organic waste, fish food leftovers, and bacterial biofilm. It readily accepts commercial dry pellets, sinking tablets, and small pieces of frozen food that land on the substrate.
Water Quality: Requires standard marine parameters: water temperature between 22 and 26 °C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity of 1.020-1.025, and KH 8-12. Adequate levels of calcium, magnesium, and carbonates are necessary to support the calcification of its exoskeleton during molts. Copper-based medications are highly lethal.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe and an essential member of the cleanup crew. It coexists peacefully with calm fish, corals, and other invertebrates. However, if there is a shortage of empty shells, the hermit crab may attack and kill live herbivorous snails (such as Turbo snails) to acquire their shells.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in a home aquarium is virtually impossible. Fertilized females carry the eggs under their abdomen until they hatch, releasing microscopic zoea larvae into the water column. These larvae are quickly removed by mechanical filtration or die due to the lack of appropriate live microalgae foods.
Risks and Diseases: Exposure to copper or heavy metals is highly lethal. The molting process is a critical stage where the hermit crab is soft and vulnerable; a lack of essential trace elements like iodine can lead to incomplete molts, while a lack of suitable replacement shells causes severe stress and halts growth.
