Geographical Origin and Habitat: The blue-stripe hermit crab, Clibanarius merguiensis, is native to the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Its geographic range extends from the coasts of East Africa and Madagascar through Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and down to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. It primarily inhabits shallow intertidal flats, coral reefs, sandy or muddy lagoons, and mangrove swamps where organic detritus is deposited by tides.
Taxonomy: Belonging to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, family Diogenidae, and genus Clibanarius. Members of this family are frequently called left-handed hermit crabs because their left claw is typically larger than or equal in size to the right. It is a small species that protects its soft, spirally curved abdomen by occupying abandoned gastropod shells, which it carries for protection.
Social Behavior: This is a peaceful, active, and highly gregarious crustacean. In the wild, they often form large clusters along the shoreline during low tide to conserve moisture and avoid predators. In the aquarium, it spends its time actively crawling over rocks and sand searching for food, climbing agilely without harming corals, and remaining active during both day and night.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Characterized by a dark brown or olive body with distinctive, bright electric-blue longitudinal stripes running along its walking legs. The tips of the claws are often orange or yellow, creating a sharp contrast. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism; separating sexes requires close examination of genital openings located at the base of the legs.

Tank Setup: Requires a marine tank of at least 30 to 50 liters, making it ideal for nano-reef setups. The tank should feature live rock and a sand or fine coral gravel substrate. It is absolutely critical to provide a variety of empty gastropod shells of various sizes and shapes (slightly larger than their current one) to allow the hermit crab to move into a new home after molting.
Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic omnivore and detritivore. It is an excellent clean-up crew member, feeding on algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, detritus, and uneaten fish food. While it will scavenge for food, its diet can be supplemented with sinking algae wafers, crustacean pellets, and occasional frozen foods. It does not require targeted individual feeding.
Water Quality: Maintain standard, stable marine parameters: temperature between 22°C and 27°C, pH between 8.1 and 8.4, and specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025. Like all marine invertebrates, it is sensitive to rapid salinity shifts and osmotic shock. Ensure adequate calcium and magnesium levels are present for shell construction, and keep the tank completely copper-free.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Extremely peaceful toward fish and corals, making it a perfect reef-safe clean-up crew member. It can cohabit with almost any peaceful reef fish. It may show aggression toward herbivorous snails (such as Turbo or Astraea) if there is a shortage of empty shells, as it will kill them to take their shells. Keep plenty of empty shells in the tank.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is highly unlikely. Females carry fertilised eggs under their abdomen until they hatch into free-swimming zoea larvae. The larvae must pass through several planktonic stages in open water before settling and finding their first tiny shell. This delicate cycle is typically interrupted by aquarium filtration systems.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy and rarely contracts diseases if water quality is maintained. The primary risk is a lack of replacement shells; if a hermit crab cannot find a suitable empty shell after molting, its soft body is left exposed to predators and fatal stress. Copper treatments are highly toxic and will result in immediate death.
