Geographical Origin and Habitat: Ancylomenes sarasvati, commonly known as the Sarasvati Anemone Shrimp, is native to the tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific. Its presence is well-documented in Indonesia (particularly Bali and Sulawesi), Thailand, the Philippines, and north to the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan. It inhabits sheltered coral reefs at depths between 5 and 25 meters, establishing obligate or facultative symbiotic relationships with various cnidarians, such as large sea anemones (Stichodactyla doreensis, Heteractis aurora) and large-polyp stony corals (Heliofungia actiniformis).
Taxonomy: This species belongs to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, family Palaemonidae, and genus Ancylomenes. Until recently, it was classified within the genus Periclimenes before being moved to Ancylomenes following phylogenetic revisions based on specific morphological characteristics. It is named after Sarasvati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts, due to its graceful movements and beautiful color patterns.
Social Behavior: It is a peaceful and highly cooperative species, best known for its activity as a cleaner shrimp. It establishes 'cleaning stations' on its host or adjacent live rocks, swaying rhythmically and waving its long white antennae to signal passing fish and invite them to approach for parasite removal. It can live solitary, in male-female pairs, or in small groups on a single host.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body is remarkably transparent, rendering it nearly invisible to predators. This transparency is accented by elegant, high-contrast patterns: a series of purple and white bands covers the dorsal side of the abdomen, carapace, and legs. A distinctive white and purple saddle-like marking is located on the upper part of the third abdominal segment. Females are significantly larger than adult males and can be easily identified when carrying clusters of colorful eggs under their abdomen.

Tank Setup: Requires a mature marine aquarium of at least 30-50 liters. To maximize its chances of survival and encourage natural behavior, it is strongly advised to introduce a suitable host anemone or coral before adding the shrimp. All powerheads and wavemakers in the tank must be fitted with intake guards to prevent the shrimp or its host cnidarian from being shredded by the impellers. The rockwork should be stable and offer sheltered zones.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous. It feeds on coral mucus, skin parasites of host fish, and leftover fish food trapped in the anemone's tentacles. In an aquarium, supplement its diet by target-feeding liquid coral foods, small frozen crustaceans (baby brine shrimp, cyclops, finely chopped mysis), or micronized dry foods for invertebrates two or three times a week near its host.
Water Quality: Requires pristine and stable chemical and physical parameters typical of tropical coral reefs: temperature between 24°C and 28°C, pH 8.1-8.4, and a stable specific gravity of 1.023-1.026. Nitrogen compounds (ammonia and nitrite) must be completely undetectable. Like all marine decapods, it requires adequate dissolved iodine levels to support the periodic molting process. Copper-based medications are highly lethal.
Compatibility and Tankmates: 100% reef-safe and harmless to corals. Coexists peacefully with clownfish and other small, peaceful marine fish. It must not be housed with predatory or aggressive species that might view it as prey, such as puffers, triggerfish, hawkfish, large wrasses, groupers, or scorpionfish. It is compatible with other peaceful shrimp in the tank.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is complex and uncommon. Although eggs are easily fertilized and incubated by the female under her abdominal pleopods, the pelagic larvae require microscopic feeding and specialized rearing tanks without mechanical filters that would cause immediate death by suction.
Risks and Diseases: The greatest biological risk is the lack of a symbiotic host (anemone or coral), which exposes the shrimp to high stress and predation. Further threats come from complications during the molting process due to water chemistry or nutritional deficiencies, and accidental exposure to trace heavy metals or medications incompatible with invertebrates.
