Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Palaemonetes varians is native to the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Europe. It thrives in salt marshes, brackish ditches, estuaries, and coastal pools, adapting to severe environmental changes.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the Malacostraca class, Decapoda order, and Palaemonidae family. Described by Leach in 1814, it is widely used in scientific research due to its remarkable osmoregulatory capabilities.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, active, and social. They prefer to live in groups, constantly foraging through the substrate and decor. They pose no threat to fish or other tankmates and serve as excellent scavengers.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features a translucent, glass-like body with minimal pale banding. Females are significantly larger than males, reaching up to 5 cm, and are identifiable by the green egg masses they carry under their tails.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Tank Setup: A small tank of 30 to 50 liters is sufficient. Provide live plants, macroalgae, or artificial caves to offer shelter during the molting period when their new shells are soft.
Diet and Feeding: Unfussy omnivore. They eat fish flakes, sinking pellets, decaying organic matter, and microalgae. They will keep the aquarium clean by consuming leftover food and waste.
Water Quality: Extremely hardy. Tolerates temperatures from 10°C to 25°C and pH 7.0 to 8.5. While they can live in freshwater, brackish water (salinity 1.005-1.010) is best for their long-term health.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Keep with small, peaceful fish like guppies, tetras, or small gobies. Avoid keeping them with large, predatory species that will eat these small, defenseless shrimp.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding is possible in captivity. Females release free-swimming larvae. However, raising the larvae successfully requires a dedicated brackish tank with green water (microalgae) for food.
Risks and Diseases: Highly sensitive to copper-based medications and water pollutants. Low mineral levels in freshwater can lead to failed molts, which are usually fatal to the shrimp.

Perfil de invertebrados
- Dieta
- Omnivore
- Palaemon varians is primarily an opportunistic omnivore that constantly scavenges the substrate. Its diet consists of detritus, uneaten fish food, and naturally occurring biofilm in the aquarium. Supplemental feedings of sinking pellets or blanched vegetables can help maintain optimal health.
- Papel ecológico
- Scavenger
- In its natural habitat, Palaemon varians acts as a crucial part of the cleanup crew. It helps to process waste materials and keeps the environment free from decaying organic matter. In captivity, it provides the exact same valuable sanitation services.
- Tamanho adulto
- 5 cm
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- While not notorious jumpers, Palaemon varians can easily escape if startled by predators or abrupt light changes. A tight-fitting lid is always recommended to ensure they stay safely within the aquarium. Escaped shrimp will quickly desiccate and perish if they breach the water surface.
- Sensibilidade ao choque
- Medium
- Palaemon varians is remarkably sensitive to sudden shifts in water parameters such as temperature and salinity. A slow drip acclimation is highly recommended when introducing this invertebrate to a new system. Rapid fluctuations can lead to shock, failed molts, or sudden death.
- Cálcio e minerais
- High
- Maintaining adequate calcium levels is essential for Palaemon varians to develop a strong exoskeleton. Calcium deficiencies can result in molting problems and leave the shrimp vulnerable to predators or disease. Regular water changes and calcium-rich diets can support healthy carapace formation.
- Muda
- Yes
- Molting is a critical and stressful period in the life cycle of Palaemon varians. After shedding its exoskeleton, it will instinctively seek hiding places until its new shell hardens. The discarded molt should be left in the tank, as the shrimp will consume it to reclaim valuable minerals.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Breeding Palaemon varians in captivity can be challenging depending on the specific larval stages required. Females often carry fertilized eggs under their pleopods until they are ready to hatch. Depending on the species, the young may hatch as miniature adults or undergo complex planktonic stages.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Peaceful
- Palaemon varians is generally peaceful but vulnerable to being eaten by larger, aggressive fish. It is best housed with other small, peaceful tankmates and plenty of hiding spots. Care should be taken to avoid housing it with natural invertebrate predators.
