Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cymo melanodactylus is widely distributed throughout the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. It is found from the Red Sea and East African coasts to the Hawaiian Islands, French Polynesia, and the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. This crab lives in a strict obligate symbiotic association with branching hard corals, primarily of the genus Acropora. It inhabits seaward reefs and shallow lagoons where these corals thrive, spending its entire life protected within the branches of the coral colonies.
Taxonomy: It belongs to the class Malacostraca, order Decapoda, family Xanthidae, and genus Cymo. Its physical structure features a small, vertically compressed, sub-circular or hexagonal carapace, typically reaching a diameter of about 2-3 centimeters. The carapace and legs are covered with small tubercles and short, dense hair (setae) that help collect detritus and algae for camouflage. The claws feature distinct, robust, smooth, deep black tips.
Social Behavior: It displays highly territorial and protective behavior toward its host coral colony. It typically lives in pairs (male and female) on a single Acropora colony, which they actively defend from intrusion by other crabs of the same species or small predators. Its relationship with the coral is mostly commensal: it feeds on mucus produced by the coral and organic debris trapped between the branches, though it may consume live coral tissue if food resources become scarce.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The base coloration of the body ranges from greenish-grey to beige or light brown, blending perfectly with the host coral. The eyes are small, protruding, and feature a very characteristic bright orange or red coloration. The claws are tipped in deep black. Sexual dimorphism is visible in adult females, which possess a much broader and more rounded abdomen compared to males to accommodate eggs during incubation.

Tank Setup: It requires a well-established marine reef aquarium with a minimum capacity of 50 liters, providing ideal conditions for the growth of hard corals. The presence of at least one healthy live colony of Acropora coral is absolutely indispensable for the crab's habitat and survival. The tank must feature intense lighting and powerful water movement to keep the host corals healthy. No special substrate setup is required, as the crab rarely leaves its host colony.
Diet and Feeding: In the wild, it feeds on organic particulate matter, food particles trapped by the coral's tentacles, phytoplankton, and coral mucus. In the aquarium, its diet is indirectly supplemented by feeding fine food for fish and corals (such as brine shrimp nauplii, rotifers, copepods, and powdered filter-feeder foods). Ensuring the crab receives sufficient food is important; in overly sterile tanks or under dietary deficiencies, it may begin feeding on the live tissue of the Acropora coral, causing bleached spots or necrosis on the colony.
Water Quality: It demands stable parameters and excellent water quality, identical to those required for keeping delicate SPS corals. Recommended values are: temperature between 24°C and 26°C, stable pH between 8.1 and 8.4, specific gravity between 1.023 and 1.025, calcium between 400 and 450 ppm, magnesium between 1300 and 1350 ppm, and dKH between 8 and 10. It is sensitive to nitrate and phosphate accumulation and does not tolerate the presence of copper in the water, which is highly lethal.
Compatibility and Tankmates: It coexists peacefully with most peaceful reef fish such as clownfish, gobies, damselfish, and surgeonfish. However, the presence of large crustacean predators like triggerfish, hawkfish, large wrasses, or octopuses must be avoided, as they could pluck it from the coral. Its compatibility with corals is generally good but requires constant monitoring: if the Acropora colony shows visible signs of stress or tissue loss, the crab may need to be removed.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is extremely difficult. The pair mates on the host coral colony, and the female incubates the eggs under her abdomen for several weeks. Upon hatching, she releases planktonic larvae (zoeae) into the water column. These larvae are quickly removed by filtration systems or eaten by fish. Raising them requires specialized rearing tanks and constant cultures of phytoplankton and zooplankton.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is related to failed molts of the exoskeleton, which requires appropriate levels of iodine, calcium, and carbonates dissolved in the water to allow proper calcification of the new shell. Regularly dosing these elements is important. Another serious risk is the death of the host Acropora coral: without its symbiotic colony, the crab loses both its protection and primary nutrition, wasting away quickly or becoming easy prey for fish.
