Geographical Origin and Habitat: Stonogobiops xanthorhinicus is native to the warm tropical waters of the Western Indo-Pacific, ranging from southern Japan to Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits shallow sandy and detrital slopes adjacent to outer coral reefs, typically at depths between 10 and 40 meters. In this flat, shelterless habitat, the fish relies completely on burrows constructed by symbiotic shrimp.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Gobiidae, subfamily Gobiinae, this species was described by Hoese and Randall in 1982. It features a slender, cylindrical body typical of small benthic gobies, with an elongated, pointed first dorsal spine that it frequently raises as a signal. The mouth has small, conical teeth. Adults reach a tiny maximum length of only 5 to 6 centimeters.
Social Behavior: Shows a remarkable mutualistic symbiosis with burrowing snapping shrimp of the genus Alpheus (such as Alpheus randalli or Alpheus bellulus). The nearly blind shrimp digs and maintains the sandy burrow, while the goby acts as a sentry. By keeping contact with the goby's tail using its antennae, the shrimp is alerted of danger and both retreat instantly into the burrow.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The color pattern is striking, featuring a white body marked by four oblique, dark brown or black longitudinal stripes. The head and snout are colored a brilliant yellow, which gives the species its scientific name 'xanthorhinica'. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism; males and females look identical to the naked eye.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Aquarium Setup: Perfect for nano reef aquariums, requiring an enclosure of at least 60 liters. It is essential to provide a mixed substrate containing fine sand, coral rubble, and small shell fragments (at least 5-7 cm deep) for the shrimp to construct and reinforce the burrow walls. Live rock must be placed securely on the glass bottom to prevent collapses from digging.
Diet and Feeding: Feeds on zooplankton and small crustaceans floating near the burrow entrance. In the aquarium, it should be offered small frozen foods such as mysis, copepods, lobster eggs, and baby brine shrimp. High-quality micro-pellets are also accepted. Feed near the burrow entrance to ensure the goby can eat without being outcompeted by faster fish.
Water Quality: Requires stable and high water quality: temperature between 24°C and 27°C, pH of 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity of 1.022 to 1.025, and dKH between 8 and 12. Ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Good filtration and regular water changes are necessary to prevent the accumulation of organic compounds in the sand.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: A very peaceful and timid fish. It should be kept with other docile, small reef species such as clownfish, small blennies, or other nano gobies. Avoid housing with large, predatory, or overly active fish that might harass it or drive it from its burrow. It is completely safe with corals and non-predatory invertebrates.
Aquarium Breeding: Captive breeding is highly complex and rarely documented. The pair deposits eggs inside the burrow managed by the shrimp, where the male guards the clutch. The hatched larvae enter a pelagic phase and require microscopic live foods (rotifers and phytoplankton) in dedicated rearing tanks to survive.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is jumping out of the tank if startled; a tightly fitting mesh cover is highly recommended. It can contract marine ich if stressed. The loss of its symbiotic shrimp companion can cause severe stress and behavioral depression, causing the goby to remain hidden and refuse food.
