Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, and western Indo-Pacific waters. It resides in intertidal habitats including rocky shores, mangrove zones, and shallow tidal pools, sheltering in empty snail shells.
Taxonomy: Member of the Diogenidae family, genus Clibanarius. Described by Heller in 1861. It is closely related to other small reef-safe hermit crabs but distinguished by its unique leg pattern and high salinity tolerance.
Social Behavior: Peaceful and active. They spend their time crawling over rocks, sifting sand, and cleaning algae. They are social but will argue over empty shells if there is a shortage of larger housing options in the tank.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features thin dark longitudinal stripes on its greenish-brown legs, with pale spots. The claws are subequal and covered in small bumps. No visible external sexual dimorphism is present.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: Suitable for reef tanks and nano setups starting from 40 liters (approx. 10 gallons). Provide a mix of sandy substrate and live rock. Scatter plenty of empty shells of various shapes and sizes to prevent shell fighting.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger. Excellent at eating hair algae, film algae, detritus, and fish waste. If the tank is clean, supplement their diet with spirulina pellets, seaweed sheets, and tiny pieces of frozen seafood.
Water Quality: Keep standard reef parameters: temperature 23-27°C (73-81°F), pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.021-1.025. Ensure adequate calcium and magnesium, and dose iodine regularly to support successful molting cycles.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Reef-safe and compatible with peaceful fish and corals. Provide extra shells to prevent them from targeting live snails (such as Astrea) for their shells. Avoid keeping with large triggerfish or puffers.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in captivity is very difficult. Females carry eggs under their abdomen. Hached larvae are planktonic and require specialized rearing tanks with live micro-foods, which is rarely successful in home aquariums.
Risks and Diseases: Extremely sensitive to copper-based treatments and elevated nitrate levels. A lack of iodine will lead to molting failures. They can be preyed upon by aggressive crabs or large bottom-dwelling fish if unprotected.
