Geographical Origin and Habitat: Clibanarius olivaceus is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It primarily inhabits intertidal zones, coastal estuaries, shallow lagoons, and mangrove swamps, exhibiting high tolerance to salinity fluctuations. It is commonly found on sandy, muddy, or rubble-rich shallow flats.
Taxonomy: Belongs to the family Diogenidae and the genus Clibanarius. Like all hermit crabs, it has a soft, asymmetrical abdomen that it protects by living inside discarded gastropod shells. The genus Clibanarius is morphologically characterized by claws (chelipeds) that are roughly equal in size with blunt tips.
Social Behavior: Social, active, and peaceful. It spends daylight hours constantly crawling over rockwork and sand in search of food. While generally peaceful towards tankmates, they will occasionally engage in minor shell fights with other hermit crabs if suitable empty shells are scarce in the tank.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Features dark olive-green or brownish walking legs, often marked with orange or yellowish stripes or joint highlights. The claws are olive with pale tubercles. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism; sexing requires examining genital openings on the underside of the crab.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: Suitable for reef or marine aquariums as small as 40-50 liters (approx. 10-12 gallons). The aquarium should feature a sand bed and plenty of live rock for climbing and foraging. It is critical to provide a variety of empty gastropod shells of different sizes scattered around the tank to allow growth.
Diet and Feeding: Omnivorous scavenger and detritivore. It actively consumes filamentous green algae, detritus, leftover fish food, and decaying organic matter. In most aquariums, they do not require target feeding, but they will benefit from occasional sinking pellets, algae wafers, or spirulina tablets.
Water Quality: Adaptable to a range of water parameters, but prefers stable marine conditions: temperature 22-27°C (72-81°F), pH 8.0-8.4, and specific gravity 1.020-1.025. Monitor calcium and carbonate levels to assist in skeletal growth during molting. Avoid copper, which is highly toxic to all crustaceans.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Peaceful and reef-safe. Compatible with peaceful fish, corals, and other non-predatory invertebrates. Do not house with predatory species such as triggerfish, hawkfish, puffers, or octopuses. Keep them supplied with empty shells to prevent them from targeting live snails.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is extremely difficult and rarely documented. Females carry fertilized eggs beneath their abdomens until they hatch into free-swimming zoeal larvae. These planktonic larvae require microscopic live foods and custom culture setups to survive to the settling stage.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is mortality due to lack of upgrade shells; without a suitable shell, the crab cannot molt safely and is highly vulnerable to predation. They are sensitive to sudden salinity drops. Ensure rock layouts are stable so they do not shift and crush the crab.
