Redtail Catfish
Phractocephalus hemioliopterus
The 'Puppy Dog' Monster of the Amazon (120-130 cm / 4+ feet). The most famously tragic victim of the aquarium industry. As a 2-inch baby in the pet store, it is unimaginably cute, colorful, and active. However, it explodes in growth faster than almost any other fish, transforming into a massive, 80-pound, 4-foot-long bulldozer with an endlessly cavernous, vacuum-cleaner mouth. While incredibly peaceful and famously 'friendly' (often begging for food like a dog), it will blindly and effortlessly swallow absolutely ANY tankmate that can physically fit inside its massive, yawning maw. It strictly requires indoor ponds or colossal 1000+ gallon acrylic mega-tanks.

Description de l'espèce

Origine et répartition géographiques
Origine
Profil de poisson
- Tempérament
- Semi-aggressive
- They are generally peaceful towards fish they cannot swallow, acting somewhat like giant, lazy pets. However, they are opportunistic predators and possess a voracious appetite. They can become territorial or agitated if the aquarium is too cramped.
- Régime alimentaire
- Omnivore
- They are carnivorous scavengers and predators that require a substantial diet. Juveniles can be fed bloodworms, earthworms, and sinking pellets. Adults need heavy meaty foods such as whole market shrimp, fish fillets, mussels, and specialized carnivore pellets.
- Espérance de vie
- 15-20 years
- Taille adulte
- 130 cm
- Ratio des sexes
- Solitary
- Sexing them visually is extremely difficult, and specific sex ratios are irrelevant for home aquaria since keeping multiple adults requires a tank size measured in thousands of gallons. They are almost always kept as solitary specimens. Groups are only seen in massive public aquariums.
- Fréquence d'alimentation
- Twice daily
- Juveniles should be fed daily to support their rapid growth rate. Once they reach adulthood, feeding should be reduced to 1-3 times a week depending on the meal size. Overfeeding adults can lead to severe health issues and fatal water quality degradation.
- Charge biologique
- Extreme
- The Redtail catfish produces an absolutely massive bioload due to its enormous adult size and hearty appetite. Only the most robust, heavy-duty commercial or custom filtration systems can handle their waste output. Huge and frequent water changes are mandatory to prevent toxic spikes.
- Courant
- Stagnant
- They originate from the Amazon basin and tolerate a range of flow conditions, but moderate flow is usually preferred. They do not require torrential currents but appreciate good oxygenation. Large filtration systems naturally provide the necessary water movement.
- Risque de saut
- Yes
- Due to their massive size and sheer strength, they can easily break glass lids or launch themselves out of the tank if spooked. Heavy, secured lids are absolutely essential to keep them contained. A panicked adult Redtail catfish can cause serious damage to equipment.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- Breeding the Redtail catfish in a home aquarium is practically impossible due to the astronomical space requirements for mature adults. They are bred commercially in massive outdoor ponds or via hormone injections in aquaculture facilities. Information on natural aquarium breeding behavior is non-existent.
- Compatibilité et compagnons
- With caution
- This is a highly predatory fish that will eat absolutely anything that fits into its incredibly large mouth. They should only be housed with other giant, robust species that are too large to be considered food. Smaller tankmates, even medium-sized cichlids, will eventually be consumed.
- Niveau dans le bac
- Bottom
- They are predominantly bottom dwellers that spend much of their time resting on the substrate or hiding inside large caves. At feeding time, they will aggressively patrol all levels of the tank. Providing vast floor space is more important than tank height.
