West African Lungfish
Protopterus annectens
The Alien Survivor of the Dry Mud (Up to 100 cm / 3+ feet). Older than the dinosaurs, this is a true 'Lungfish' (Dipnoi) possessing actual lungs. It is globally famous for its bizarre, almost supernatural ability to survive years of total drought by burying itself in baked mud, wrapped in a dried mucous cocoon, waiting for rain. It looks like a massive, fleshy, grey sausage with four thin 'spaghetti' strands for fins. It is a strictly solitary pet; it violently hates tankmates and possesses a horrifyingly strong beak capable of biting massive chunks of flesh out of any fish unlucky enough to share its tank.

Origine et répartition géographiques
Origine
Profil de poisson
- Tempérament
- Semi-aggressive
- Highly aggressive and solitary. They have powerful jaws capable of inflicting serious injuries. Handle with care and avoid placing hands near their mouth.
- Régime alimentaire
- Omnivore
- Carnivorous and highly predatory. They feed on fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and insects. In captivity, they can be fed earthworms, chunks of fish, shrimp, and large pellets.
- Espérance de vie
- 15-20 years
- Taille adulte
- 100 cm
- Ratio des sexes
- Solitary
- Sexing is generally difficult visually. They are best kept solitary, so sex ratio is not usually a concern. A single individual is recommended per tank.
- Fréquence d'alimentation
- Twice daily
- Feed adult lungfish 2-3 times a week to prevent obesity. Juveniles can be fed daily or every other day. Remove uneaten food promptly to maintain water quality.
- Charge biologique
- Extreme
- High due to their large size and messy eating habits. They produce significant amounts of waste. Powerful filtration and frequent water changes are essential.
- Courant
- Stagnant
- Prefer slow-moving or stagnant water, mimicking their natural swamp and floodplain habitats. Strong currents can be stressful. Avoid high flow rates.
- Risque de saut
- Yes
- High risk. They are known to escape from tanks if not securely covered. A heavy, tight-fitting lid is absolutely mandatory as they will push against it.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- Difficult in captivity and requires large specialized setups. In the wild, they build nests in the mud where eggs are guarded by the male. Inducing breeding usually requires simulating dry and rainy seasons.
- Compatibilité et compagnons
- Solitary
- Best kept alone as a single specimen. They are known to bite chunks out of other fish and even conspecifics. Tankmates are usually considered food or rivals.
- Niveau dans le bac
- Bottom
- Primarily bottom dwellers but will come to the surface frequently to breathe air. They need unobstructed access to the surface. Ensure there are no sharp decorations that could injure them during surface visits.
