Powder-blue panchax
Pachypanchax omalonotus
A killifish endemic to Madagascar — the island-continent with a unique biodiversity. The male sports a powder-blue body with iridescent hues. Unlike annual Nothobranchius, Pachypanchax are non-annual (long-lived) killifish, making them more accessible. Surface-dwelling fish with an upward-facing mouth. Relatively robust for a Malagasy killifish, but requires clean, stable water. Conservation matters: nearly all Malagasy Pachypanchax are threatened by habitat loss.

Origine et répartition géographiques
Origine
Profil de poisson
- Tempérament
- Semi-aggressive
- They are generally peaceful but confidently active. Males will frequently display to each other to establish dominance. They may mildly harass other surface-dwelling species.
- Régime alimentaire
- Carnivore
- They are micropredators requiring a carnivorous diet. Live and frozen foods like bloodworms are highly relished. They will usually accept high-quality dry flakes or micropellets.
- Espérance de vie
- 3-5 years
- Taille adulte
- 9 cm
- Ratio des sexes
- Specific M:F ratio
- Keep them with a ratio of one male to several females. This disperses the male's aggressive breeding behavior. Males can be highly combative toward one another.
- Fréquence d'alimentation
- Twice daily
- Feed them small portions once or twice a day. They are enthusiastic eaters that eagerly surface for food. Do not overfeed to maintain optimal water quality.
- Charge biologique
- Low
- This killifish contributes a moderate bioload to the aquarium. Standard filtration handles their waste output efficiently. Regular maintenance ensures pristine water conditions for them.
- Courant
- Strong
- They prefer gentle to moderate water flow environments. Fast currents can exhaust them and cause severe stress. Floating plants help baffle the flow effectively.
- Risque de saut
- Yes
- Like most killifish, they are incredibly accomplished jumpers. A secure lid with no gaps is strictly necessary. They can easily jump through remarkably small openings.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- They are continuous spawners under the right conditions. Eggs are deposited daily in fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Parents may eat the fry, so eggs should be removed.
- Compatibilité et compagnons
- Peaceful
- They can be kept in a peaceful community setup. Avoid keeping them with much smaller, bite-sized tank mates. They coexist well with peaceful tetras and medium-sized rasboras.
- Niveau dans le bac
- Top/Middle
- They heavily favor the top level of the aquarium. They are classic surface dwellers looking for terrestrial insects. They will rarely venture into the bottom zones.
