Geographical Origin and Habitat: Atya gabonensis is native to West Africa (ranging from Senegal to Gabon) and Eastern South America (Venezuela and Brazil). It inhabits fast-flowing coastal rivers and streams with rocky substrates. It spends daylight hours sheltered under submerged logs, rocks, and root complexes, facing upstream to catch food particles in the flow.
Taxonomy: Classified within the Atyidae family, this shrimp is characterized by its heavy build, thick forelegs equipped with fan-like bristles (filter fans), and a thick, ridged exoskeleton that gives it a prehistoric, armored appearance. Adults can grow up to 12-15 cm in length.
Social Behavior: Despite its intimidating name and appearance, it is extremely peaceful and completely harmless to fish and plants since it lacks defensive claws. Mostly nocturnal, it will venture out during the day if shaded resting spots with strong water currents are available, often sharing filtration posts with conspecifics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Displaying remarkable color plasticity, individuals can change color after each molt, shifting from cobalt blue, slate gray, and dark brown to creamy white or pinkish-orange. Sexual dimorphism is distinct; adult males possess significantly thicker and spinier third-pair legs compared to females.

Tank Setup: A tank of at least 80-100 liters is required, equipped with powerheads or filter outputs to create a strong, directed water current. Provide plenty of rock caves, PVC pipes, and driftwood structures close to the flow zones so the shrimp can perch securely while filtering.
Diet and Feeding: Obligate filter feeders consuming suspended organic particulate (phytoplankton, zooplankton, micro-algae, detritus). In captivity, they must be fed daily with powdered foods (spirulina, baby shrimp food, crushed flakes) or fine frozen foods (cyclops, rotifers) targeted directly into the water current.
Water Quality: Demands highly oxygenated, pristine water: temperature 22-28°C, pH 6.5-7.8, GH 6-15, and KH 4-10. Ammonia and nitrites must be zero. Adequate calcium and iodine levels are necessary to assist the molting process. Extremely sensitive to copper and other heavy metals.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Perfect for peaceful community aquariums. Excellent tankmates include small fish, dwarf shrimp, and snails. Never keep with aggressive or predatory species such as large cichlids, aggressive barbs, puffers, or crayfish, which could easily kill the shrimp, especially after molting.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in a freshwater aquarium is impossible. The species produces small eggs that hatch into primitive marine larvae, requiring brackish and saltwater phases to develop. Once metamophosed into post-larvae, they migrate back into freshwater systems.
Risks and Diseases: Starvation is the leading cause of death in clean, over-filtered tanks without targeted feeding. Other risks include molting failures caused by poor mineral balance and copper poisoning. If they are seen searching the substrate with their fans, it indicates a critical lack of food in the water column.
