Description de l'espèce
Geographical Origin and Habitat: This cultivar originates from the locality of "Pancuraji" in West Kalimantan, Borneo. Bucephalandra species are endemic to this large Indonesian island. In their native habitat, they grow along shaded rainforest streams, anchoring to basaltic rocks. Their environment features constant high humidity and sudden water level increases that submerge the plants for brief periods.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Belonging to the family Araceae and the genus Bucephalandra, it is part of the Bucephalandra motleyana complex. Botanical classification is challenging due to high phenotypic plasticity, but "Pancuraji" is recognized for its unique leaf traits. Genetically, it has adapted to absorb nutrients in nutrient-poor waters and resist currents. Propagation is done vegetatively via rhizome division.
Physical Structure: The plant develops a creeping, woody rhizome that branches slowly over time. The roots are tough and grip porous rocks or driftwood securely. The leaves of "Pancuraji" are small to medium-sized, lanceolate or elliptical, with wavy margins. The leaf petiole is short and elastic to minimize drag.
Color & Texture: Leaves display a dark green coloration with bluish or purple metallic reflections under proper light. The upper surface of the leaf blade is peppered with tiny silver dots (modified stomata) that sparkle underwater. The leaf texture is thick, leathery, and waxy, protecting the plant from debris.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Lighting & CO2: Requires low to moderate lighting. High light can cause algae growth on the slow-growing leaves unless nutrients are balanced. CO2 injection is recommended as it encourages compact growth and intensifies the plant's metallic colors.
Nutrition & Substrate: Must not be planted in the soil. It is an epiphyte whose rhizome must remain exposed to the
Water Chemistry: Prefers clean, stable water with a KH range of 1 to 10 dKH and a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Keeping organic waste levels low is key to preventing algae issues. The recommended temperature range is 20°C to 28°C.
Space Management & Placement: Ideal for foreground or midground placement, attached to rocks or driftwood. It grows very slowly, making it perfect for nano tanks or for creating details in larger aquascapes, forming neat clumps over time.
Pruning: Propagated by cutting the creeping rhizome with a sharp blade, ensuring each divided piece has at least 3-4 leaves and a few roots. Trim dead or decaying leaves close to the rhizome to maintain cleanliness.
Risks & Diseases: The main risk is rhizome rot if the plant is buried or placed in areas with stagnant water. Black Beard Algae (BBA) can colonize the leaf margins under unbalanced conditions. Sudden changes in water chemistry can trigger leaf melting.

Profil de plante
- Emplacement
- Plan intermédiaire
- This epiphyte is perfectly suited for the foreground or midground of the aquascape. Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" should be attached directly to hardscape materials such as wood or porous rocks. Burying its rhizome in the substrate will cause it to rot and die off. Its dense, dark leaves provide an excellent textural contrast when placed in crevices.
- Forme botanique
- Rhizome
- Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" is characterized by its dense, dark leaves that adapt well to submerged life. The foliage often displays tiny silver speckles on the surface, adding to its visual appeal under strong lighting. It grows from a creeping rhizome that firmly attaches to surfaces using strong, specialized roots. The plant occasionally produces beautiful small white underwater flowers.
- Croissance
- Lente
- Like most Bucephalandra species, Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" exhibits a notoriously slow growth rate even under optimal conditions. The addition of CO2 injection can slightly increase the speed of development and improve leaf density. You can expect only a few new leaves per month from a healthy rhizome. Patience is key when cultivating this plant.
- Substrat
- Aucun
- This rheophytic plant does not rely on a deep or nutrient-dense substrate, as its natural habitat consists of rocky river banks. Bucephalandra motleyana 'Pancuraji' possesses strong adhesive roots that allow it to cling securely to wood and stone surfaces within the aquascape. Planting the rhizome in sand or soil will suffocate the plant and induce rapid rotting of the stem. It fulfills its nutritional demands directly from the water, benefiting greatly from regular additions of liquid micro and macronutrients.
- Fertilisation de la colonne d'eau
- Recommandée
- Liquid fertilization is the preferred method for feeding Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji". A comprehensive fertilizer containing iron and micronutrients will enhance its dense, dark appearance. Dosing should be kept lean to prevent algae from outcompeting its slow growth. Regular water column dosing ensures the leaves remain healthy and vibrant.
- Fertilisation racinaire
- Aucune
- Root fertilization is entirely unnecessary for Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" as it does not rely on substrate nutrients. Its roots serve primarily as anchors to grip onto hardscape elements rather than for nutrient uptake. Any root tabs placed in the soil will not directly benefit the plant. Instead, focus entirely on water column enrichment.
- Taille
- Occasionnelle
- Trimming Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" is rarely needed due to its exceptionally slow growth habit. When necessary, use sharp aquascaping scissors to cut the rhizome cleanly, ensuring each separated piece has several healthy leaves. Remove any decaying or older leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth. Regular pruning of damaged foliage helps keep the plant looking pristine.
- Propagation
- Rhizome division
- Propagation of Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" is easily achieved by simply dividing the main rhizome. Ensure that each cut segment contains a growing tip and at least three or four established leaves for best results. Use superglue or cotton thread to attach the newly separated rhizomes to fresh hardscape. Over time, these cuttings will establish their own root systems and continue to creep along the surface.
- Sensibilité
- Modérée
- Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" is somewhat sensitive to sudden fluctuations in water parameters, which can trigger leaf melt. It is also highly susceptible to black beard algae and green spot algae on its slow-growing leaves. Maintaining stable CO2 levels, consistent maintenance, and clean water is crucial to prevent these issues. It generally prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with good flow.
- Rôle dans le décor
- Premier plan, Plan intermédiaire, Nano
- Bucephalandra motleyana "Pancuraji" serves as an exquisite detailing plant in natural, forest, or jungle style aquascapes. The dense, dark leaves offer a beautiful contrast against bright green mosses and light-colored rocks. It works wonderfully for highlighting small focal points or filling gaps in the hardscape structure. Its relatively compact size makes it ideal for both large setups and nano aquariums.
