Geographical Origin and Habitat: This fascinating shrimp species is strictly endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, where it inhabits unique anchialine pools. These pools are landlocked coastal water bodies composed of brackish water, which have no surface connection to the ocean but are connected underground to both freshwater aquifers and marine waters through volcanic lava tubes. In these porous habitats, the shrimp migrate vertically and horizontally through rocky crevices.
Taxonomy: Halocaridina rubra belongs to the family Atyidae and is the most popular representative of the genus Halocaridina. Known locally by the Hawaiian names 'Opae'ula' or Hawaiian red shrimp, it is a micro-crustacean, reaching a maximum length of 1 to 1.5 centimeters as adults. They possess tiny, specialized claws covered in brush-like bristles for scraping bio-films from the substrate.
Social Behavior: This species is incredibly gregarious and peaceful. Unlike many other territorial decapods, Opae'ula coexist harmoniously in colonies composed of hundreds or even thousands of individuals without any intraspecific aggression. They spend their entire day active, either swimming in schools throughout the water column or grazing side-by-side on rock surfaces.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Their body color ranges from a vibrant ruby red to pink, orange, or even completely translucent white. They can change color rapidly in response to environmental lighting, stress, or breeding conditions. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: mature females are slightly larger and have broader abdominal plates to carry their red-colored eggs.
Soins, reproduction et cohabitation
Tank Setup: Requires an aquarium starting at 10-20 liters (3-5 gallons), set up preferably with porous volcanic lava rocks stacked to create caves and crevices. Aragonite sand or crushed coral serves as the ideal substrate to maintain an alkaline pH. Live plants are generally not recommended, but Cladophora algae balls or brackish-tolerant mosses can survive in moderate salinity.
Diet and Feeding: The shrimp feed primarily on the natural bacterial biofilm and microalgae that colonize lava rock surfaces. In a mature, well-lit tank, supplemental feeding is rarely necessary. If desired, minuscule amounts of spirulina or powdered shrimp food can be offered once every two to four weeks. Overfeeding is the primary cause of system collapse in small setups.
Water Quality: Thrives in brackish water with a specific gravity between 1.008 and 1.016, corresponding to roughly 10-15 ppt salinity. The pH must be kept alkaline (7.8 to 8.4) and water temperature stable within a range of 20-26 °C (68-79 °F). Although they can tolerate lack of filtration in balanced ecospheres, the water must remain free of ammonia and nitrites.
Compatibility and Tankmates: A species-only tank is highly recommended to protect the shrimp from predation. Any fish, regardless of size, will eat these tiny shrimp and their larvae. The only safe and compatible tankmates are brackish-tolerant snails, such as Melanoides (trumpet snails) or Nerite snails, which help consume detritus and prevent organic waste buildup.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding occurs naturally in established and stable aquariums. After mating, the female carries a small clutch of red eggs (usually 10 to 30) under her pleopods for about 30 to 45 days. Upon hatching, the larvae do not require transition to pure seawater or specialized planktonic food; they simply feed on the existing rocky biofilm and mature.
Risks and Diseases: Overfeeding and subsequent water fouling pose the greatest danger, as decaying food triggers toxic ammonia spikes. Like all crustaceans, they are highly sensitive to copper, heavy metals, and pesticide residues. Water changes should be kept to a minimum, and top-offs for evaporated water must be done with pure RO water only.
