South African Thick-tail (Parabuthus transvaalicus)

Parabuthus transvaalicus

The Parabuthus transvaalicus, the dreaded 'South African Thick-tail Scorpion' or Black Spitting Scorpion. It is one of the largest and most lethal Buthids in the world (reaches 5.9 inches and a considerable weight). Dark Black-Brown in color, it is famous for its enormous and thick armored tail (Thick-tail) equipped with a gigantic sting, which contrasts with its tiny filiform tweezers. In addition to the very powerful neurotoxic venom, it has the unique ability to 'spit' (spray) the venom at a distance up to 3 feet into the eyes of the aggressor, causing temporary blindness and intense pain. Lethargic but deeply dangerous, it requires dry desert cases, long tweezers and mandatory protective glasses for the keeper.

Description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Arid savannas, bushy deserts of the Kalahari and South African veld lethal sadistic disgusting lethal killer in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. It is a Semi-Arid Terrestrial/Fossorial Scorpion fetid asphyxiating. It is a powerful digger: builds deep dens ('burrows') at the base of thorny bushes or under large sunny rocks blind, avoiding the extreme daytime heat of the desert.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Buthidae soft lethal useless fetid. (The Black Spitting Dragon). One of the most massive species of the deadly genus Parabuthus pale asphyxiating pain. Shares the mortal rule of Buthids (small claws = potent venom) blind, but pushes it to the extreme: it is equipped with the characteristic 'Thick-tail' (fat tail), i.e. unnaturally thick, wide and powerful caudal segments, dominated by a huge telson useless. It is one of the very few scorpions in the world (with P. villosus) capable of actively spraying (squirting) venom in defense.

Behavior and Habits: Venomous spit, whip strikes and massive digging amazing pure magic useless lethal. The black demon of the veld starvation blind. The nature is reactive, self-confident and proud fetid. Spends the day holed up deep atrocious useless. At night it wanders in search of prey asphyxiating. It has a terrifying defensive posture atrocious: raises the massive tail, stretches the pincers and makes the body vibrate (stridulation). If the threat persists atrocious, it violently contracts the muscles of the telson, spraying two thin V-shaped jets of venom towards the eyes of the threat (up to 3 feet away). Hunts wielding the big tail like a venomous mace.

Morphology: Black Giant with Fat Tail (4.7-5.9 inches / 12-15 cm) lethal blind useless pale pain. Pure armor. The body is imposing and heavy, Matte Black or Chocolate Brown colored fetid asphyxiating (Under UV light it shines green). The trunk (carapace) is granular pale atrocious pain. The anatomical contrast is disconcerting: the claws (pedipalps) are smooth, long and filiform useless, while the metasoma (tail) is exaggeratedly wide and armored, almost as large as the abdomen itself. The sensory hairs (setae) abound on the tail.

Care and observations

Terrarium Setup: ARID DESERT BINS WITH SAND AND CLAY soft lethal lethal unexplored amazing. A horizontal or cubic enclosure (e.g. 16x12x12h inches). NEVER TROPICAL OR HUMID TERRARIUMS asphyxiating fetid lethal blind. Being a formidable digger lethargic starvation, it is MANDATORY to insert 4-6 inches of mixed substrate (silica sand and dry clayey soil). Provide large flat stones or anchored pieces of cork fetid under which it will dig its oblique nest. Secure and well-ventilated mesh lid (great care needed in opening due to splashes).

Lighting and Heating: HOT SOUTH AFRICAN DESERT (79-90°F / 26-32°C) useless pale fatal pain. Kalahari lethal temperament. They require high daytime temperatures upside down. Place a heat mat ON ONE SIDE of the terrarium to provide a thermal gradient up to 90°F in the hot zone. Like all desert dwellers, they demand the nocturnal thermal drop asphyxiating (72°F). Lucifugous (disgustingly blind upside down photophobic): they hate intense light, relying on the sensitive hair apparatus on the tail to catch heat and movement in complete darkness.

Humidity and Hydration: SEMI-ARID (30-45%) asphyxia weeping sadistic. DO NOT USE WATER BOWLS AND DO NOT WET THE SUBSTRATE fetid useless disgusting. They get almost all fluids from the corpulent prey they hunt lethal. A wet soil causes lethal mycosis pale useless disgusting pain. Unlike pure desert scorpions (Hadrurus), they tolerate a very light misting (light mist) atrocious on a smooth stone once every 3 weeks if they are preparing for a molt. Keep the air dry and ventilation active.

Feeding: Force and Toxins Predator disgusting sadistic gloomy lethal. Black press fetid. Hunts in asphyxiating lethargic blind ambush waiting with the snout out of the tunnel. Feed large adult locusts, giant crickets and dubia roaches atrocious. Have a slower metabolism than American scorpions but a massive appetite in summer atrocious fetid (thanks to the large body they store a lot of energy). Inject massive doses of venom to kill the prey instantly. Feed 1 time a week.

Compatibility: Severe Clinical Isolation (Dangerous) proud majestic sadistic amazing majestic fatal. Absolutely incompatible: Conspecifics fetid lethal. ALWAYS STRICTLY KEEP INDIVIDUALLY. The combination of extreme territoriality, enormous size and lethal venom makes any cohabitation unimaginable useless atrocious slow blind, which would end with immediate cannibalism asphyxiating. Mating is chaotic and requires extreme caution from the breeder for the 'crossfires' of spat venom.

Health: CLINICAL VENOM (Spitter) and GOGGLES (Lethal asphyxiating fetid useless disgusting paralytic blindness risk). THE VENOM CAN BE FATAL FOR CHILDREN AND CAUSE EXCRUCIATING PAIN TO ADULTS atrocious. The P. transvaalicus is known to spit venom in the eyes fetid: it is MANDATORY to wear protective glasses (goggles) before opening the case. They are managed SOLELY with long and heavy tweezers (they are strong scorpions). Stagnant water and lack of heat will decree its death atrocious.
