Reptile profile
- Diet
- Carnivore
- Like all ball pythons, the Pastel morph is an obligate carnivore that preys exclusively on appropriately sized rodents and small birds. They are powerful constrictors, relying on ambush tactics to strike and coil around their prey with immense force. In captivity, their diet consists almost entirely of mice and rats, which provide all the necessary nutrients for their growth and vibrant coloration.
- Adult size
- 150 cm
- The catalog's scalar value is 150 cm. The ReptTraits v1.2 source reports a maximum adult measurement of 150 cm for this species, recorded as total length (TL). These figures are not interchangeable: the first is the profile's editorial reference, whereas the second is a published maximum under a specific measurement convention; differences among sources can reflect sex, population, life stage and measuring method.
- Lifestyle/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Heavy-bodied terrestrial snakes that spend most of their time on the ground. They appreciate thick leaf litter and securely enclosed, tight-fitting hides to alleviate stress.
- Activity cycle
- Nocturnal
- Primarily nocturnal and highly secretive. They spend the vast majority of daylight hours resting in dark, snug hides and become active after sunset to explore or ambush prey.
- Sociality
- Solitary
- The Pastel ball python shares the famously docile and shy temperament characteristic of the species. When frightened or stressed, they will tightly curl into a protective ball, tucking their head safely in the center of their coils. They are strictly nocturnal, preferring to spend their days hidden in dark, secure burrows or hides before emerging at night to explore and hunt.
- Reproduction
- Oviparous
- Ball pythons are oviparous, with females typically laying between 4 to 10 relatively large eggs per clutch. The Pastel morph breeds under the same conditions as wild-type individuals, requiring a slight drop in temperature to stimulate reproductive behavior. Females are highly maternal during incubation, tightly coiling around their eggs to regulate humidity and temperature until they hatch.
- Handling tolerance
- Tolerant
- Renowned for their incredibly docile and shy nature. When frightened, they typically curl tightly into a ball to protect their head, making them one of the most manageable snakes for all levels.
- Brumation
- As a tropical species native to Central and Western Africa, they require consistently warm ambient temperatures year-round and should absolutely never be subjected to brumation or freezing drafts.
- Molting
- Regular
- Sheds its skin in one complete, continuous piece. Maintaining moderate to high humidity (60-75%) during the shedding cycle is critical to prevent retained eye caps and patchy, stuck skin.
