Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to northern and eastern Australia (Queensland). Inhabits dry woodlands, rocky outcrops, hillsides, and limestone caves.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Pythonidae, genus Antaresia. Evolved a smaller body plan compared to larger Asian pythons, adapting to hunting inside rocky crevices.
Behavior and Habits: Primarily terrestrial but an active climber, active during crepuscular and nocturnal hours. They have a very docile temperament and tolerate occasional handling well.
Morphology: Reaches 90-120 cm (3-4 feet) in length. Pale brown or beige body covered in dark, irregular blotches that form a cryptic pattern.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: An enclosure measuring 80x40x40 cm is ideal for an adult. Provide at least two hides (warm and cool sides), climbing branches, and a dry substrate of aspen bedding or coconut coir.
Lighting and Heating: Create a thermal gradient with a basking spot of 32-34°C (90-93°F) regulated by a thermostat, and a cool end of 24-26°C (75-79°F). Low-level (5%) UVB lighting is recommended.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain humidity between 40-60%. Provide a sturdy water dish large enough for the snake to soak in, especially during its shed cycle.
Feeding and Supplementation: Carnivorous. Feed appropriately sized thawed frozen mice every 10-14 days for adults. Supplementation is rarely needed if rodents are high-quality.
Compatibility: Solitary animal. Should be housed individually to prevent stress or juvenile cannibalism. Never house males together.
Health and Common Diseases: Very hardy. Common issues include respiratory infections from cold or drafty conditions, substrate impaction, and stuck shed if humidity is too low during ecdysis.
