Geographical Origin and Habitat: Ecsenius springeri is native to the tropical waters of the Western Indo-Pacific, registered particularly along the coasts of Indonesia (including the Moluccas and West Papua) and the Philippines. It inhabits coral-rich outer reefs and shallow sheltered lagoons, from 1 to 15 meters deep, spending its time perched on hard coral colonies or well-lit live rocks.
Taxonomy and Morphology: It belongs to the family Blenniidae, subfamily Salariinae. It presents the elongated and scaleless body typical of blennies, with a large head, mobile eyes, and a downward-directed mouth. It reaches a maximum adult size of about 5 centimeters. It has small nasal and supraorbital tentacles. The teeth are flexible and comb-like to scrape algae.
Social Behavior: It is a solitary, diurnal, and markedly territorial fish with conspecifics or fish of similar shape. It spends the day perched on rocks, from which it performs rapid darts to feed or to re-enter its cave (usually a hole in the rock or an empty shell). It communicates with head movements and rapid changes in shade.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The background coloration is reddish-brown or almost black in the front part of the body, fading into a bright yellow or orange in the back part and on the caudal fin. It presents characteristic light longitudinal stripes or spots on the back and head. There is no visible external sexual dimorphism, although adult males may be slightly larger.

Aquarium Setup: It requires an aquarium of at least 80 liters for a single specimen. A moderate to strong water flow is ideal to simulate the reef environment.
Diet and Feeding: It is predominantly herbivorous (algivorous). In the aquarium, it constantly feeds by scraping the algal biofilm from the rocks and glass. The diet must be supplemented with dry foods based on algae, spirulina in flakes or granules, and nori seaweed sheets placed on clips. It occasionally accepts small frozen foods (such as brine shrimp or cyclops), but excess animal proteins must be avoided.
Water Quality: It requires stable marine parameters: temperature 22-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, specific gravity 1.020-1.025, KH 8-12. It is important to ensure well-oxygenated water with low levels of phosphates and nitrates to prevent stress, although a moderate growth of filamentous algae and diatoms on the rocks is necessary for its sustenance.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: It is 100% reef-safe and does not harm corals, although it may occasionally perch on hard coral polyps causing temporary closure. It can coexist with peaceful reef fish like clownfishes, damselfishes, and gobies. Avoid cohabitation with other blennies of the genus Ecsenius to prevent violent territorial aggressiveness.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in the aquarium is documented but not common in the home. They are demersal egg layers. The female lays adhesive eggs inside the male's cave, and he takes care of fanning and defending the nest until hatching. The larvae are planktonic and require live rotifers and sterile conditions for development.
Risks and Diseases: The main risk is related to malnutrition if placed in sterile aquariums devoid of live rocks and natural algae; under such conditions, it can waste away quickly. It is a potential jumper if frightened, so the tank must be covered. It is moderately resistant to diseases if fed correctly, but can contract skin parasites under severe stress.
