Three-toed Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina triunguis

The 'Three-toed Box Turtle'. Close cousin of the Eastern, it differs anatomically for having only three toes in its hind legs and for a less 'bright' coloration on the carapace (often olive or hazelnut color), but compensated by spectacular ruby red scales on the neck and front legs in males. More tolerant to arid environments and hardy.
