Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed across the tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and Madagascar to Polynesia and Australia. Inhabits coastal sandy beaches very close to the shoreline.
Taxonomy: Member of the family Coenobitidae. Possesses modified gills adapted to terrestrial life. It must carry a reserve of salt water inside its shell to hydrate. Grows to 8-10 cm.
Social Behavior: Highly social and gregarious. In the wild, forms large beach-dwelling groups to scavenge coastal detritus. Active primarily at night and enjoys climbing.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Distinctive bright red or strawberry-orange body covered with fine white bumps resembling strawberry seeds. Dark eyes. No obvious external sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Requires a spacious dry terrarium with a deep substrate (at least 6-8 inches) of fine marine sand to allow burrowing and molting. Provide climbing branches, rocks, and replacement shells.
Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic omnivore. Eats fruits, vegetables, dried insects, fish meat, cuttlebone for calcium, and dry leaves. A varied diet rich in carotenoids is essential to maintain its red color.
Water Quality: Dry setup with high relative humidity (75-85%). Provide two shallow water dishes: one with dechlorinated fresh water, and one with marine salt water. The crab must be able to submerge.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Keep only in terrariums with other land hermit crab species. Not suitable for standard aquatic marine or reef tanks. Avoid aggressive tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding: Extremely difficult. Larval development involves a marine zoeal phase that requires open ocean conditions and specialized planktonic foods to survive.
Risks and Diseases: Fast dehydration and death if humidity drops below 75%. Color loss if diet lacks natural pigments. Molting failures if the substrate is dry or shallow.

- Si sotterra completamente nella sabbia umida per effettuare la muta, rimanendo sepolto per diverse settimane.
- Reproduction
- La riproduzione in cattività richiede condizioni di marea marine complesse e non è praticabile in ambiente domestico.
