Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Highly common in the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa and India to Indonesia, the Philippines, and Western Pacific islands. Found in coastal mangrove forests and estuaries.
Taxonomy: Member of the family Coenobitidae. Distinguished by the lack of prominent stridulatory ridges on the large left claw and a specialized groove on the leg segment. Grows to 8-10 cm.
Social Behavior: Peaceful, social, and mostly nocturnal. Tolerates high humidity environments well and prefers to stay close to water sources. An excellent climber that rests on tree roots.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Body color is mostly brown, dark tan, olive, or greyish-green with violet-red highlights on the leg joints. Left claw is greyish-brown. No visible sexual dimorphism.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Tank Setup: Requires a dry terrarium with at least 6 inches of substrate made of fine sand and coconut fiber. The substrate must remain moist to support burrowing and molting.
Diet and Feeding: Opportunistic scavenger and omnivore. Eats fresh fruits, vegetables, dried insects, dead leaves, fish meat, and commercial pellets. Cuttlebone must be supplied for calcium.
Water Quality: Provide two shallow water dishes: one with dechlorinated fresh water, and one with marine salt water. Keep relative humidity at 70-80% to maintain moist gills.
Compatibility and Tankmates: Keep only in terrariums with other land hermit crab species. Coexists peacefully in large groups of its own or related species (Coenobita).
Aquarium Breeding: Larval development involves a marine zoeal phase that requires open ocean conditions and specialized planktonic foods to survive.
Risks and Diseases: Fast dehydration and death if humidity drops below 70%. Risk of mold infections if substrate is waterlogged. Molting failure if substrate is too dry or shallow.
