Unicorn Snail
Subulina octona
The Subulina octona (Unicorn Snail). It is a microscopic land snail (rarely exceeds 0.6 - 0.8 inches in total length) but with an unmistakable design: it possesses a very thin, translucent shell with an extremely elongated (turreted) spiral shape, which faithfully resembles the horn of a unicorn. Due to its tiny size and predilection for hot and constantly wet soils, it is often bred not as an exhibition specimen, but as a very useful 'Clean-up Crew' inside large bioactive terrariums or paludariums for dart frogs (Dendrobates) and crested geckos. Extremely peaceful, detritivorous and harmless to healthy live plants, it is however a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite species with explosive prolificacy: a single snail can autonomously found a colony of hundreds of individuals in the substrate within a few months. The tiny calcareous eggs, similar to pearls, are an excellent calcium supplement for small insectivorous reptiles in the terrarium.

Perfil de invertebrados terrestres
- Dieta
- Detritivore
- They are detritivores, primarily consuming decaying plant matter, fungi, and algae. In a terrarium, they help clean the environment by eating dead leaves and uneaten food from other inhabitants. They should also be provided with a calcium source for shell health.
- Tamanho adulto
- 1.7 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- Terrestrial, preferring moist environments like leaf litter, soil, and rotting wood. They are often found in tropical and subtropical regions. Their slender shells allow them to maneuver easily through dense substrate.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- Mostly nocturnal, they emerge at night to feed and explore. They can sometimes be seen during the day if the enclosure is very humid or dark. They prefer to stay near the substrate where moisture is highest.
- Socialidade
- Gregarious
- They are exceptionally social and highly gregarious, naturally forming very dense, large colonies. They completely lack any territorial behaviors or aggression towards one another. They actively thrive in highly crowded conditions, frequently gathering in large numbers around prime food sources or concentrated areas of optimal moisture without any negative interactions.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- This species is hermaphroditic and highly prolific, often reproducing rapidly in favorable conditions. They lay small clutches of round, translucent eggs in the soil. The eggs hatch quickly, and the tiny offspring immediately begin feeding on detritus.
- Venenoso
- No
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- Due to their small size and fragile shells, handling is generally not recommended. If they must be moved, it is best to gently scoop them up with some substrate or a leaf. Keep hands wet and free of chemicals if direct contact is necessary.
- Brumação
- They do not typically brumate or aestivate unless environmental conditions become unsuitably dry or cold. Maintaining consistent warmth and humidity will keep them active year-round. If conditions drop, they may become sluggish and bury themselves.
- Muda
- Periodic
- Like other snails, they do not shed their skin but continually grow their shell in a spiral pattern. Access to calcium is essential to prevent shell thinning or deformities. A healthy shell appears smooth and somewhat translucent.
