Descrição da espécie
Morphology (Panda King):: Medium-sized isopod from Asian caves. Stocky body divided into three stark color segments (white, black, white) just like a panda.
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Pantropical species, cosmopolitan par excellence. Originally from the hot Asian humidities, but widespread in Florida, Brazil and Hawaii hidden under debris, bark and rocks of extremely rainy areas.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Armadillidae. (The Little Sea Bug). Unlike the majestic undescribed Cubaris sp. (like the Ducky or the Jupiter), the murina is scientifically classified and widely documented. It is the 'country cousin' of the dynasty, lacking the immense enameled armor or fluorescent colors, but balances with an incredible hardiness (which in this family is a very rare commodity).
Behavior and Habits: Wet armored tractors. Snappy if annoyed and not perpetually paralyzed by terror like the elite. Although they can close into a perfect ball if attacked by ants or asphyxiating spiders, they spend the nights grazing with impunity on rotting wood and emerge from the mud en masse as soon as you spray the terrarium with warm water. They multiply like fast tropical parasites.
Morphology: Total dome and armored with smooth scales (Up to 0.5 inches max / 1.2 cm). Small but very agile. The wild 'Wild Type' morph is a fantastic dark Slate Gray or ashen Leaden color, with a light dusty veil (Bloom) that makes it opaque. The posterior segments occasionally exhibit very light brick shades or pale spots. Fast and tight conglobation.

Perfil de invertebrados terrestres
- Dieta
- Detritivore
- Their primary diet consists of decomposed hardwood leaves and thoroughly rotting white wood. For optimal health and shell development, they must be continuously supplied with a robust calcium source like limestone or cuttlebone, supplemented bi-weekly with protein-rich foods such as dried shrimp or specialized isopod diets.
- Tamanho adulto
- 1.5 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- They lead a highly terrestrial, fossorial lifestyle, spending extensive periods burrowed deeply within moist, nutrient-rich substrate. They rely heavily on a well-established microclimate with specific humidity gradients, preferring to stay buried among decaying wood and roots rather than wandering on the open surface.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- They exhibit a largely nocturnal and crepuscular activity pattern, remaining carefully concealed during the daylight hours to avoid predators and dry air. When darkness falls and humidity peaks, they emerge from the substrate to forage actively on decaying organic material across the terrarium floor.
- Socialidade
- Gregarious
- They are peaceful, highly gregarious animals that perform best in densely populated colonies. They do not demonstrate any aggressive behaviors toward conspecifics, and the presence of a thriving population often stimulates increased feeding activity, overall colony confidence, and more frequent successful reproductive cycles.
- Reprodução
- Viviparous
- Breeding occurs continuously under appropriate environmental parameters, with females incubating their developing brood inside a specialized ventral marsupium. The young, called mancae, emerge as tiny, white, fully-formed isopods and immediately begin foraging alongside the adults without any need for parental care.
- Venenoso
- No
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Tolerant
- Due to their small size and sensitivity to desiccation and stress, direct handling should be avoided whenever possible. They are prone to panic and may drop quickly when startled. If they must be moved, carefully transferring the piece of bark they are resting on is the safest method.
- Brumação
- Não obrigatório
- As a species originating from tropical environments, they do not require and should not be subjected to brumation or winter cooling. Maintaining a consistent, warm ambient temperature is critical year-round; cold drafts or sudden temperature drops can severely impact the colony's health and halt reproductive activity.
- Muda
- Periodic
- The molting process is biphasic, with the posterior shell shedding first, followed by the anterior section a few days later. During this vulnerable time, they require elevated local humidity to prevent shedding complications. Never remove their discarded exuviae, as eating it replenishes essential calcium.
