Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Endemic to the montane mossy forests of Mount Isarog, an active volcano located in the Bicol Peninsula of Luzon Island, Philippines. It occurs at high elevations, typically above 900 meters, where it occupies the understory vegetation, ferns, and moss-covered trees.
Taxonomy and Genetics: A member of the family Ceratobatrachidae and the genus Platymantis. It belongs to the group of Philippine cloud forest frogs that undergo direct development, meaning the eggs develop directly into fully formed terrestrial froglets, bypassing the aquatic tadpole phase.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly nocturnal and semi-arboreal. During the day, it retreats into moist leaf axils, epiphytes, or hollow branches. At night, males emerge to perch on leaves and low twigs up to 1.5 meters high, emitting short, high-pitched vocalizations to advertise territories.
Morphology: A very small frog, measuring approximately 20-30 mm in snout-vent length. It exhibits a slender body, large eyes, and expanded pads on its digits for gripping vertical, wet plant surfaces. The dorsal skin is olive-green or grayish-brown, providing perfect camouflage.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Terrarium Setup: Requires a tall, vertically oriented vivarium of at least 45x45x60 cm. Incorporate live broad-leafed plants (such as bromeliads, ferns, and pothos), climbing branches, and a moisture-retaining substrate like forest soil topped with thick sphagnum moss.
Lighting and Heating: Provide low-output UVB (2%) and LED lighting for live plants. This high-altitude species requires cool temperatures, ranging from 19°C to 23°C (66°F-73°F) during the day, with a night drop to 16°C-17°C (60°F-62°F). Avoid temperatures above 25°C (77°F).
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain high relative humidity levels of 85% to 95%. Automated misting systems using reverse osmosis water are highly recommended. Good ventilation via mesh tops or dual-vent designs is essential to prevent air stagnation and mold growth.
Feeding and Supplementation: Feeds on small, live invertebrates. Offer flightless fruit flies, pinhead crickets, bean beetles, and springtails. Dust all prey items with pure calcium carbonate and D3 twice a week, and use a reptile multivitamin supplement once a month.
Compatibility: Can be housed in small groups of one male and multiple females if space is sufficient. Avoid housing multiple males together in small spaces due to territorial calling stress. Do not mix with larger frogs or aggressive terrarium species.
Health and Common Diseases: Vulnerable to lethal heat stress if temperatures exceed their montane threshold. Dirty conditions combined with low airflow can lead to systemic bacterial infections (Red Leg). Ensure strict cleanliness and stable environmental parameters.

Perfil anfíbio
- Dieta
- Insectivore
- This species is primarily insectivorous in the wild, feeding on a wide variety of small forest invertebrates. In captivity, their diet should consist of appropriately sized crickets, fruit flies, and small worms. It is important to dust the feeder insects with calcium and vitamin supplements to ensure proper nutrition. Feeding them every other day is usually sufficient for adult frogs. Clean, fresh water must be available at all times.
- Expectativa de vida
- 2-8 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 3 cm
- Estilo de vida/Microhabitat
- Terrestrial
- These amphibians lead a primarily terrestrial and scansorial lifestyle within tropical forest ecosystems. They navigate the complex structure of the forest floor, frequently climbing on small shrubs, roots, and rocks. A heavily planted terrarium with a deep substrate layer best replicates their natural habitat. They thrive in environments with very high humidity and dense vegetation. Consistent environmental conditions are key to keeping them healthy.
- Ciclo de atividades
- Nocturnal
- They are predominantly nocturnal animals, becoming most active after the sun goes down. During the day, they remain well hidden in the damp, shaded parts of the forest floor to avoid desiccation and predators. Once night falls, they emerge to actively forage for small insect prey. Captive environments should mimic this cycle with appropriate lighting periods. A strict day and night cycle is crucial for their overall well-being.
- Socialidade
- Gregarious
- As small forest dwellers, these frogs are generally quite shy and reclusive by nature. They spend the majority of their time hidden among leaf litter, under decaying logs, or in the crevices of low-hanging vegetation. When threatened, they rely heavily on their natural camouflage to blend into the forest floor. They may vocalize during the breeding season with distinct calls to attract mates. Providing ample hiding spots in captivity helps reduce their stress levels.
- Reprodução
- Direct development
- These frogs are known for their unique reproductive strategy, often involving direct development in moist terrestrial environments. Rather than having a free-swimming tadpole stage, females lay eggs in damp leaf litter. Inside the egg capsules, the embryos develop fully and hatch as miniature, fully formed froglets. This adaptation allows them to reproduce without relying on standing bodies of water. Maintaining adequate moisture in the breeding enclosure is strictly required.
- Toxicidade
- Toxic
- No known toxicity to humans, but sensitive to chemical agents on the skin.
- Estágio de vida
- Direct development
- Direct embryonic development: eggs are laid in moist leaf litter and hatch directly into tiny frogs.
- Tolerância de tratamento
- Display only
- Like most small frogs, they have delicate, permeable skin that can absorb harmful oils and salts from human hands. They should be considered a display-only species, with handling strictly avoided unless absolutely necessary for health evaluations or enclosure transfers.
- Brumação
- Não obrigatório
- Hailing from tropical environments, this species does not undergo brumation. They require a consistently warm and highly humid environment year-round, without significant seasonal drops in temperature.
- Muda
- Periodic
- They shed their skin regularly, a process heavily dependent on maintaining high ambient humidity in the enclosure. Shedding happens quickly and discreetly, often at night, and the shed skin is almost always immediately consumed by the frog to recover nutrients.
