Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Cirrhilabrus punctatus is native to the Western Pacific, ranging from the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Tonga. It inhabits protected coral reefs, lagoons, and rubble-dominated zones at depths between 2 and 78 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: It belongs to the family Labridae. The body is slender and streamlined with a short snout. Adult males are distinguished by exceptionally elongated pelvic fins, which can reach half or more of the standard body length. The maximum size is about 13 cm.
Social Behavior: A peaceful, gregarious species well-suited for community reef aquariums. In nature, they live in harems consisting of a dominant male and multiple females. Males engage in dramatic courtship displays, flashing intense colors while swimming rapidly with flared fins.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: Sexual dimorphism is highly pronounced. Males are dark greyish-red on the upper body with fine pink-to-blue speckles, and white on the lower third. Females are mostly reddish-orange with a distinct black spot at the upper base of the caudal fin.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Aquarium Setup: Needs a tank of at least 200-250 liters with plenty of open swimming space and numerous live rocks forming caves and crevices for cover. They are notorious jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid or fine mesh screen is absolutely mandatory.
Diet and Feeding: A planktivorous carnivore. It should be fed a varied diet of frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, copepods, and lobster eggs. It will also accept high-quality dry pellets. Frequent feeding (at least twice daily) is recommended due to their active lifestyle.
Water Quality: Requires stable marine aquarium conditions: temperature of 24-27°C, pH of 8.1-8.4, and salinity between 1.020 and 1.025. An efficient protein skimmer and good water movement are essential to maintain high oxygenation levels.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Extremely peaceful and reef-safe, as it will not harm corals or ornamental invertebrates. Can be housed with a wide variety of peaceful tankmates. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive fishes that might bully them into jumping.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is very rare. They are protogynous hermaphrodites; if kept in a group of females, the largest, most dominant individual will transition into a male. They are pelagic spawners, dispersing eggs in open water.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is physical injury or death from jumping out of uncovered tanks. They can contract common marine parasites (marine ich or velvet) if stressed. A proper acclimation period and quarantine are advised before introduction.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Active
- The Cirrhilabrus punctatus is widely known for its peaceful and somewhat timid demeanor. They make excellent additions to peaceful community tanks but can be easily intimidated by large, aggressive species. When kept in a suitable environment, they are incredibly active and outgoing, providing constant movement and vibrant flashes of color.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- In the wild, the Cirrhilabrus punctatus is predominantly a zooplanktivore that feeds continuously in the water column. In captivity, it adapts readily to a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine flakes, pellets, and frozen foods. Providing enriched mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and Calanus will help maintain its vibrant coloration and overall health.

- Harem
- A proper harem structure is the most natural way to keep the Cirrhilabrus punctatus. It is generally recommended to keep one male with several females to disperse any potential aggression. Keeping multiple males of the same species usually results in intense fighting unless the aquarium is exceptionally large with ample hiding spaces.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- Due to its active nature and small stomach, the Cirrhilabrus punctatus should be fed small amounts multiple times a day. Two to three feedings per day are generally recommended to keep them in optimal condition. Infrequent feeding may lead to weight loss and a weakened immune system over time.
- Carga biológica
- Medium
- The Cirrhilabrus punctatus generally has a moderate bioload. These are highly active fish that require frequent feedings to sustain their high metabolic rate. Consequently, this leads to a proportional amount of waste being produced in the aquarium. Proper filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain the pristine water quality they need.
- Fluxo
- Strong
- The Cirrhilabrus punctatus prefers moderate to strong water movement in the aquarium. This flow simulates their natural reef environment and encourages their natural swimming and foraging behaviors. Ensuring adequate flow also helps keep their preferred zooplankton foods suspended in the water column longer.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- There is an extremely high risk of jumping associated with the Cirrhilabrus punctatus. They are easily startled by sudden movements, changes in lighting, or aggressive tank mates, which often results in them darting towards the surface. A tight-fitting lid or fine mesh screen is absolutely mandatory to prevent them from leaping out of the aquarium.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Like most wrasses, the Cirrhilabrus punctatus is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning all individuals are born female. As they mature, the dominant female in a group will undergo a transformation into a male. Breeding in captivity is rare due to the complex pelagic larval stage, which requires specialized food and rearing conditions.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Peaceful
- The Cirrhilabrus punctatus is typically considered reef safe and a peaceful community fish. It will not bother corals, clams, or most ornamental invertebrates found in a reef tank. However, caution should be exercised when mixing them with other fairy wrasses or flasher wrasses, as males can become territorial towards similar species.
- Nível do tanque
- Top/Middle
- The Cirrhilabrus punctatus is primarily a mid-water swimmer that spends the majority of its time actively navigating the open water column. It will frequently dart in and out of the rockwork while searching for food or seeking refuge. At night, they secrete a mucus cocoon and sleep wedged within the crevices of the live rock.
