Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Halichoeres marginatus is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from the Red Sea and East Africa, across the Indian Ocean to the Hawaiian, Line, and Tuamotu Islands, reaching north to southern Japan and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It inhabits shallow lagoons, inner reef flats, and seaward slopes rich in coral growth, typically at depths shallower than 30 meters near sandy patches.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belonging to the family Labridae (wrasses), it features an elongated and moderately compressed body shape. The head is conical with a terminal mouth containing small, canine-like teeth designed to pluck prey from rock crevices. The caudal fin is rounded in juveniles and turns truncate as they mature. The species can reach a maximum size of 15 to 18 centimeters in length.
Social Behavior: An active diurnal swimmer that spends the day hunting across the rockwork and retreats into the sand bed to sleep at night. It is generally peaceful toward unrelated tankmates but can exhibit territorial behavior toward other wrasses of similar shape, size, or color. It should ideally be kept as the only wrasse of its genus in smaller aquariums.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: This species undergoes significant color changes during its lifecycle. Juveniles and females are dark greyish-brown with fine light lines along the body and a black ocellus on the dorsal fin. Mature terminal males are nearly black, decorated with radiant neon-green, orange, and pink stripes on the head, with distinct colored borders on the margins of their dorsal and caudal fins.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Aquarium Setup: Requires a spacious aquarium of at least 300 liters (approx. 80 gallons) to accommodate its active swimming behavior. A deep bed of fine, non-abrasive sand (minimum 6-8 cm depth) is mandatory, as this wrasse buries itself in the substrate to sleep and hide. Provide plenty of live rock for hunting and hiding. A tight lid or mesh cover is required to prevent the fish from jumping out of the tank.
Diet and Feeding: Carnivorous. It is an excellent biological control agent for common reef pests, including flatworms, pyramidellid snails, and small nudibranchs. In the aquarium, it should be fed a varied diet of meaty frozen foods such as mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood. They will also readily accept high-quality marine pellets and flakes.
Water Quality: Demands clean, well-oxygenated water. Keep the temperature stable between 23°C and 27°C, pH at 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity at 1.023 to 1.025, and carbonate hardness (KH) at 8-12 dKH. Efficient filtration, protein skimming, and regular water changes are necessary to handle the biological load of this active feeder.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe with caution. While it does not harm corals, it will prey on small ornamental invertebrates like tiny shrimps, crabs, fan worms, and ornamental snails. It cohabitates well with larger, active fish such as tangs, angelfish, clownfish, and semi-aggressive damselfish.
Aquarium Breeding: Breeding in home aquariums is not documented. They are protogynous hermaphrodites, spawning pelagically in the water column where eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. In nature, dominant males form temporary breeding territories and perform courtship displays to entice females to rise and spawn.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is physical injury or chronic stress if kept in a bare-bottom tank or with coarse substrate, as they must bury themselves to rest. They are active jumpers, particularly during acclimation. While generally disease-resistant, they can contract marine ich if subjected to persistent stress or poor water parameters.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Semi-aggressive
- They are constantly on the move during daylight hours. While usually peaceful, they are opportunistic predators. Their bold nature makes them a fascinating addition.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- They are carnivores feeding on benthic invertebrates. In the aquarium, offer meaty foods like mysis shrimp. Providing a varied diet maintains their vibrant colors.
- Expectativa de vida
- 5-7 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 17 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Solitary
- It is best to keep them singly. Adding multiple males results in severe aggression. A group of females might establish a pecking order.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- They are highly active with a fast metabolism. Feeding them two to three times a day is ideal. Small frequent meals help reduce aggression.
- Carga biológica
- Medium to High
- This species contributes a moderate bioload. They produce moderate waste due to their diet. A good skimmer and regular water changes are required.
- Fluxo
- Moderate
- They originate from reef environments with strong water movement. Good water flow helps oxygenate the water. Varying flow patterns mimics their natural habitat well.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- Wrasses are notorious for jumping out of aquariums. A tight-fitting lid or screen mesh is mandatory. Ensure all gaps are properly covered to prevent escape.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- These fish are broadcast spawners in the water column. Breeding in captivity is extremely rare. Specialized setups with deep tanks and planktonic food are required.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- Reef safe
- They are generally peaceful towards other fish. However, they may become territorial with other wrasses. Use caution as they might eat small ornamental crustaceans.
- Nível do tanque
- Middle/Bottom
- They actively swim in the mid-water regions. They require a deep fine sand bed to sleep. Coarse substrate can damage their bodies and should be avoided.
