Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Rhizophora mangle is native to the tropical coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and eastern Pacific, widely distributed in estuaries, lagoons, and brackish marshes of Florida, the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South America. It grows in the intertidal zone, serving as a natural barrier against coastal erosion.
Taxonomy & Genetics: Belonging to the Rhizophoraceae family, it is commonly known as the "Red Mangrove." Genetically, it is a highly specialized plant, adapted to tolerate high salt concentrations through genetic mechanisms of root ultrafiltration and salt accumulation in older leaves.
Physical Structure: It features an erect woody stem from which characteristic arched prop roots (pneumatophores) develop, lifting the plant above the water level. The leaves are opposite, elliptical, leathery, and equipped with a waxy cuticle. It produces elongated, torpedo-shaped propagules for reproduction.
Color & Texture: The leaves are bright green on the upper surface and lighter, duller green underneath. The stem and prop roots have greyish-brown bark with reddish undertones inside (hence the name red mangrove). The leaf texture is rigid, waxy, and smooth.
Cuidado, criação e companheiros de tanque
Lighting & CO2: Requires exceptionally strong lighting (preferably high-output LED spotlighting or metal halide lamps focused on the emersed leaves). It absorbs CO2 directly from the air, so dissolved CO2 supplementation is unnecessary.
Nutrition & Substrate: Although it can grow in pure hydroponics with roots suspended in water, it benefits significantly from a deep, muddy or sandy substrate rich in iron and nutrients. It requires constant fertilization with magnesium and iron.
Water Chemistry: Extremely adaptable to salinity: it grows in freshwater, brackish water (optimal), or pure marine water. It requires warm temperatures between 22 and 30°C (72-86°F) and cannot tolerate frost or sudden temperature drops.
Space Management & Placement: Placed exclusively in open tanks or paludariums, as only the roots should be submerged, while the stem and leaves must grow emersed in the air. It requires ample vertical space for foliage growth.
Pruning: Pruning is limited to periodically pinching back the upper branches to promote bushier, more compact growth and to control its height. Dead leaves should be removed before they decay in the water.
Risks & Diseases: The main risk in saltwater is salt accumulation on the emersed leaves: it is mandatory to regularly mist the leaves with freshwater to wash off secreted salt crystals. Magnesium deficiencies cause leaf yellowing.

Perfil da planta
- Posicionamento
- Flutuante
- It must be placed with its roots submerged and its upper foliage extending above the water surface. It is ideal for open-top aquariums, paludariums, or sump refugiums. The propagules should be partially submerged, allowing roots to anchor in deep sand or mud.
- Forma botânica
- null
- It grows as a woody tree or shrub, characterized by its iconic, stilt-like prop roots that provide stability. The aerial leaves are thick, elliptical, and a vibrant green, designed to conserve water and tolerate salt. It creates a stunning above-water canopy with a complex underwater root labyrinth.
- Crescimento
- Lenta
- The growth rate is moderately slow but steady once the root system is established. It produces large, leathery leaves above the water line over time. Intense overhead lighting can significantly accelerate its development and root expansion.
- Substrato
- Alta
- As a robust coastal species, the Red Mangrove requires a deep and nutrient-rich substrate to support its extensive root system. A deep bed of fine sand or muddy aquatic soil, at least 4 to 6 inches thick, is ideal to allow its characteristic prop roots to anchor securely. These complex root structures not only provide physical stability but also play a critical role in absorbing essential minerals and filtering water. Adequate substrate depth is vital for maintaining the plant's upright growth and overall long-term health in an aquarium or paludarium.
- Fertilização de coluna
- Nenhuma
- Column fertilization helps during the initial rooting phase and in systems with low bioloads. However, in heavily stocked tanks, the mangroves often find sufficient nutrients from fish waste alone. Supplemental iron and trace elements can boost foliage health and color.
- Fertilização radicular
- Recomendada
- A nutrient-rich substrate, such as a deep sand bed or mud enriched with root tabs, greatly benefits its extensive root system. Mangroves naturally thrive in organic-rich coastal soils, so providing localized root nutrition mimics this environment. Strong root development is key to supporting its large aerial structure.
- Corte
- Ocasional
- Pruning the aerial branches can encourage a bushier, more compact growth form suitable for indoor setups. Dead or drying leaves should be promptly removed to prevent them from falling and decaying in the water. Root pruning is rarely needed unless the roots are severely outgrowing their designated area.
- Propagação
- Sementes
- Propagation is naturally achieved through viviparous seeds known as propagules. These long, dart-like structures can be planted directly into the substrate or suspended in the water to root. Cuttings from mature branches generally do not root well and are not a viable propagation method.
- Sensibilidade
- Moderada
- Red mangroves are sensitive to extreme cold and require a warm, tropical ambient temperature above the water. They are adaptable to fresh, brackish, and marine water, but require slow acclimation if changing salinity levels. Insufficient overhead lighting will quickly lead to leaf drop and stunted growth.
- Função de layout
- Flutuante, paludarium, riparium
- It plays a dramatic structural role, bridging the aquatic and terrestrial realms in an open-top display. The submerged prop roots offer excellent shelter for fish and fry, while the aerial leaves provide a natural canopy. It is perfect for biotope aquariums aiming to replicate coastal or estuarine environments.
