Descrição da espécie
Geographical Origin and Habitat:
This species is native to the tropical reefs of the Western Central Pacific, ranging from Indonesia and the Philippines to the Line Islands. It is found along steep outer reef drop-offs at depths of 20 to 60 meters, where sunlight is filtered and currents are moderate. It is closely associated with deep rock crevices and caves.
Taxonomy and Morphology:
Member of the Labridae family. Features a slender, fusiform body and a pointed snout adapted for hunting in rock crevices. Grows up to 10 cm in length. The caudal fin has a distinct crescent shape.
Social Behavior:
A solitary and active diurnal reef dweller. It can establish territories and show aggression toward other hogfish or similar-looking wrasses, but is peaceful toward unrelated species.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism:
Displays striking alternating red and white horizontal stripes. The tail fin features a dark brown-to-black crescent shape at its base. No visible sexual dimorphism exists between males and females.

Aquarium Setup:
Demands a tank of at least 150 liters with extensive rockwork to create caves and shaded overhangs. A tight-fitting lid is critical because they are notorious jumpers when startled.
Diet and Feeding:
Carnivore. Feeds on small micro-crustaceans. Feed a variety of frozen foods (mysis, enriched brine shrimp) and high-quality pellets two to three times daily.
Water Quality:
High water quality is essential. Maintain temperature at 22-27°C, pH at 8.1-8.4, and salinity at SG 1.020-1.025. Adequate water movement and protein skimming are required.
Compatibility and Cohabitation:
Reef safe with caution. Safe with corals, but will prey upon small ornamental shrimp (such as sexy shrimp). Keep with active, moderately sized tankmates.
Aquarium Breeding:
Not recorded in home aquariums. They are broadcast spawners in nature, releasing pelagic eggs into the water column during twilight hours.
Risks and Diseases:
High jump risk makes a covered tank mandatory. Susceptible to stress-induced parasites like marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) if water quality is poor.

Perfil de peixe
- Temperamento
- Peaceful
- Semi-aggressive as they mature. They may bully smaller or newly added fish. Keep with similarly sized robust companions.
- Dieta
- Carnivore
- Predatory carnivores requiring meaty foods. Provide chopped squid, mysis shrimp, and krill. They will also accept sinking pellets.
- Expectativa de vida
- 5-8 years
- Tamanho adulto
- 10 cm
- Proporção sexual
- Solitary
- Best kept singly in most aquariums. A male and female pair can be kept in very large tanks. Two males will be aggressively territorial.
- Frequência de alimentação
- Twice daily
- Two or three daily feedings are sufficient. They have a healthy appetite. Ensure variety to maintain their health.
- Carga biológica
- Low to Medium
- Hogfish generate a moderate bioload. They are hearty eaters and active swimmers. Maintain good water quality with regular changes.
- Fluxo
- Strong
- Moderate water movement is adequate. They do well in standard reef flow patterns. Ensure good surface agitation.
- Risco de salto
- Yes
- They can jump if threatened by tank mates. A secure cover is highly recommended. Keep water parameters stable to avoid stress.
- Reprodução
- Oviparous
- Captive breeding is not commonly achieved. They are pelagic broadcast spawners. Larval stages are pelagic and hard to feed.
- Compatibilidade e companheiros de tanque
- With caution
- Generally safe with larger fish. They will eat small crustaceans and shrimp. Not considered completely reef safe.
- Nível do tanque
- All levels
- They frequent the lower to middle regions. They like to swim around caves and crevices. They sleep in the rockwork at night.
