Description de l'espèce

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia, particularly within the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and Mae Klong river basins, as well as the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. It inhabits slow-flowing rivers, canals, flooded rice paddies, and shallow freshwater swamps. It prefers quiet waters rich in riparian vegetation, submerged roots, and silt or leaf litter substrates that provide cover and foraging sites.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Cyprinidae, genus Rasbora. It features a slender, elongated, and slightly laterally compressed body shape, with an upturned mouth typical of surface-feeding fishes. It reaches a modest maximum length of about 4.5-5.0 centimeters. It lacks barbels, and its scales are relatively large and clearly visible along the flanks.
Social Behavior: A peaceful, lively, and strictly schooling species. It must be kept in groups of at least 8-10 individuals; keeping fewer will lead to extreme shyness, stress, and vulnerability to disease. It swims primarily in the middle and upper layers of the aquarium, moving in tight coordination with its school, creating a dynamic visual effect.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The body coloration has a silvery or golden-olive base. A distinct blackish-blue stripe runs longitudinally from the gill cover to the tail base, highlighted by a thin, iridescent golden stripe above it. Its most prominent feature is the bright red patch at the base of the caudal fin. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: mature females are slightly larger and rounder, while males are slimmer and show brighter colors.

Soins, reproduction et cohabitation

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium with a minimum length of 60-80 cm (approximately 60 liters / 15 gallons for a small group). The ideal setup includes a dark sandy substrate, dense live aquatic plants along the sides and back (such as Vallisneria, Hygrophila, and Cryptocoryne), and driftwoods or roots to create natural visual barriers while leaving a large open swimming area in the center. Floating plants help diffuse light and reduce stress.
Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic omnivore that feeds on tiny insects, crustaceans, and zooplankton in the wild. In the aquarium, it readily accepts high-quality dry foods such as flakes and micro-pellets. It is highly recommended to regularly supplement their diet with frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to maintain energy and coloration.
Water Quality: A hardy species that is highly adaptable as long as water parameters remain stable. The optimal values are a temperature between 22°C and 26°C (71.6°F - 78.8°F), a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5 - 7.5), and a low to medium water hardness (GH 5-12 dGH). A reliable filtration system is essential, but water flow should be kept moderate.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Excellent candidate for community aquariums. It coexists peacefully with other small cyprinids, tetras, benthic catfish like Corydoras and Loricariids, peaceful dwarf cichlids, or small gouramis. Avoid housing it with large, predatory, or overly aggressive fish that could easily view it as prey.
Aquarium Breeding: Relatively easy to breed in a separate dedicated spawning tank. It is an egg-scattering species that provides no parental care. The spawning tank should be filled with soft, slightly acidic water and contain fine-leaved plants (such as Java moss or Cabomba) or a spawning grid at the bottom to protect the eggs from the hungry adults, which must be removed immediately after spawning.
Risks and Diseases: Very hardy, but susceptible to Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) or bacterial infections if subjected to sudden temperature fluctuations or poor water quality. A monotonous diet can weaken their immune system. Introducing new fish without proper quarantine is the main cause of disease outbreaks.

Profil de poisson

Tempérament
Semi-aggressive
They are peaceful, active, and distinctly gregarious in nature. A proper school size is crucial for them to feel secure. They bring wonderful kinetic energy to any community tank.
Régime alimentaire
Omnivore
Blackline Rasboras are omnivorous and readily accept a variety of foods. A staple diet of crushed high-quality flakes works perfectly. Supplement this with small live or frozen foods like brine shrimp.
Espérance de vie
3-5 years
Taille adulte
6 cm
Ratio des sexes
School
They should be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals. An even mix of males and females works perfectly well. Males will display their best colors when competing for female attention.
Fréquence d'alimentation
Twice daily
Feed them two to three small meals throughout the day. Their small stomachs process food quickly and efficiently. Ensure all food is eaten promptly to prevent water fouling.
Charge biologique
Low to Medium
These small schooling fish have a relatively light bioload. Their active swimming requires clean water, but they do not produce excessive waste. A well-maintained biological filter will easily handle a sizable school.
Courant
Stagnant
They enjoy a moderate water flow that provides some swimming resistance. This mimics the flowing streams they naturally inhabit. Avoid overwhelming currents that force them to hide constantly.
Risque de saut
Yes
Like many rasboras, they can jump if startled by sudden movements. A secure aquarium lid is highly recommended to prevent accidents. Keeping them in a large, comfortable school reduces skittishness.
Reproduction
Oviparous
They are egg-scatterers that show no parental care whatsoever. To breed them, a separate dimly lit tank with fine-leaved plants is needed. Adults must be removed immediately after spawning to prevent egg-eating.
Compatibilité et compagnons
Peaceful
They are exceptionally peaceful and thrive in a mixed community aquarium. Other similar-sized cyprinids, tetras, and peaceful catfish are perfect tank mates. Aggressive or significantly larger species will easily intimidate them.
Niveau dans le bac
Middle
They are highly active in the middle strata of the aquarium. They will enthusiastically dart around open swimming spaces. They rarely spend significant time near the extreme top or bottom.
