Geographical Origin and Habitat: This species is native to the Western Central Pacific, primarily found in Indonesia (specifically East Kalimantan and the Raja Ampat Islands). It inhabits shallow coastal reefs, silty bays, estuaries, and lagoons with sandy bottoms rich in algae and detritus, typically at depths of 1 to 15 meters.
Taxonomy and Morphology: Belongs to the family Labridae and the genus Halichoeres. It features an elongated, slightly laterally compressed body with a pointed snout and terminal mouth. The maximum adult length is around 9 centimeters, making it a medium-sized wrasse suitable for moderately sized home aquaria.
Social Behavior: An active and curious fish that remains in constant motion during daylight hours. It has an absolute biological requirement to bury itself in fine sand at night to sleep or when threatened. It is generally peaceful toward other species but can show territorial behavior toward conspecifics.
Coloration and Sexual Dimorphism: The color pattern consists of a greenish to yellowish-green base body color, adorned with pinkish-red horizontal lines and spots on the head and along the flanks. Sexual dimorphism is distinct: dominant males show much brighter and more contrasted colors, while females and juveniles are duller, often featuring dark spots or ocelli on the dorsal fin.

Aquarium Setup: Requires an aquarium of at least 120 to 150 liters. The single most important requirement is a deep bed of fine, non-sharp sand (at least 5-7 cm deep) to allow the wrasse to bury itself without scraping its skin. Provide plenty of live rock for foraging, but leave a significant portion of the sand bed open.
Diet and Feeding: An opportunistic carnivore. In the wild, it feeds on small benthic invertebrates. In captivity, its diet should include frozen foods like mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped krill, fish eggs, and minced clam. It will usually accept high-quality dry pellets and flakes over time.
Water Quality: Requires stable marine parameters: specific gravity of 1.020 to 1.025, water temperature of 24 to 27 °C, and a pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Efficient filtration and regular vacuuming of the sand bed are necessary to prevent the accumulation of toxic anaerobic pockets where the fish sleeps.
Compatibility and Cohabitation: Reef-safe with corals, but caution is advised with small invertebrates. It may eat small ornamental shrimp, fan worms, and tiny snails, which are part of its natural diet. It coexists well with active, similar-sized tankmates; avoid housing it with slow-moving or extremely shy fish.
Aquarium Breeding: There are no documented cases of successful breeding in home aquariums. In nature, they are pelagic broadcast spawners. The complex nature of their mating behavior and the microscopic size of the floating larvae make breeding them in captivity highly impractical.
Risks and Diseases: The primary risk is skin damage and severe stress from the absence of a proper fine sand bed; housing them on coarse gravel or bare-bottom tanks leads to fatal injuries. They are also known to jump when startled, making a secure screen top or lid an absolute necessity.
