Lined Leaf-tailed Gecko

Uroplatus lineatus

The 'stick' gecko of the bamboo forests. Extraordinarily different from all other Uroplatus, this gecko doesn't imitate dead leaves or bark, but has evolved into a very long, tapered shape devoid of dermal fringes to perfectly blend with the smooth stalks of Malagasy bamboo.

Description

Origin and Habitat: Eastern and northeastern forests of Madagascar. A hyper-specialized species that lives and nests almost exclusively in areas densely populated by yellow bamboo canes.

Morphology: Absolutely atypical and instantly recognizable. It reaches up to 10-10.5 inches (25-27 cm), but is extremely narrow, elongated, and cylindrical, making it look like a 'snake gecko' or a piece of cane. It entirely lacks the dermal fringes along the margins (fimbria) typical of its cousins; its smooth body and lanceolate tail, combined with longitudinal lines on the back, offer the perfect optical illusion of striated bamboo. Forward-protruding, almost owl-like eyes.

Behavior: Extremely passive and lethargic by day; instead of sleeping flattened head-down on trunks, the lineatus sleeps stretched out longitudinally, tucking its legs under its slender body to appear as an extension of the smooth cane. It springs like a coiled trap during night hunting.

Care and observations

Terrarium: Extremely specific. Very tall terrarium (e.g., 18x18x24 or 24x18x36 inches) highly ventilated with screens. The decoration is crucial and non-negotiable: dense vertical and diagonal forests of thick, smooth yellow bamboo canes to which they will cling for the rest of their lives.

Lighting and Temps: Intermediate temperatures. Daytime 75-79°F (24-26°C). At night, cooling to around 68-72°F (20-22°C) is necessary. Being nocturnal, they do not need intense UVA/UVB lamps or dangerous heat spots that could dehydrate or stress them; low-dose neon (2%) is enough for bioactive tanks and photoperiod.

Humidity and Water: Humid monsoon environments, with daily wet-dry cycles. Spray or run the rain system every night until humidity reaches 90%, letting the bamboo drip water. By day, it must ventilate down to 60%.

Diet: Voracious visual predator; consumes large quantities of crickets and small locusts, tracked from its vantage points on the bamboo. High-quality powder supplements are required every other day.
