Description

Origin and Habitat: Widespread along the eastern coast of Madagascar and introduced to several neighboring islands. It typically inhabits the edges of rainforests, banana and palm plantations, and even suburban areas with abundant vegetation.

Morphology: Small size (about 4.5-5.5 inches / 12-14 cm). The body is bright green, often with red or dark spots on the back. The distinctive trait is a conspicuous black or dark brown band flanked by lighter lines running along the flanks, starting behind the eye.

Behavior: Diurnal and highly agile. They are shy compared to larger Phelsuma and spend much of their time hiding among the intertwined leaves of Pandanus or Musaceae. Handling is discouraged due to their speed and delicate skin which can tear (cutaneous autotomy).

Care and observations

Terrarium: A vertical glass terrarium (minimum 18x18x24 inches) is ideal. The decor must include abundant smooth bamboo poles, both horizontal and vertical, and broad-leaved plants like Sansevieria, Bromeliads, or Pothos to provide essential visual cover for their sense of security.

Lighting and Temps: Mandatory UVB light (5.0) for vitamin D3 synthesis. They require a thermal gradient: the cool zone around 72-77°F (22-25°C) and a localized basking spot at about 86°F (30°C). A nighttime temperature drop (around 68°F / 20°C) is appreciated.

Humidity and Water: Tropical environments with 60-80% humidity. They rarely drink from bowls; hydration occurs by licking water droplets that form on leaves and glass after heavy morning and evening misting.

Diet: Primarily insectivorous and frugivorous. Offer appropriately sized insects (crickets, fruit flies, small roaches) dusted with calcium and vitamins, alternating with commercial crested gecko diet (CGD) powders 2-3 times a week.
