Description
Origin and Habitat: Rainforests, plantations, and even urban areas in northern Madagascar. They are strictly arboreal and live almost exclusively on broad-leaved trees and large, smooth bamboo stalks.
Morphology: Reaches 11-12 inches (28-30 cm), making it the largest in the Phelsuma genus. The base color is a brilliant neon green, with a red 'V' pattern on the snout and irregular crimson blotches down the back. Their skin is incredibly soft and fragile: if grabbed, they can literally tear off large patches of skin (sloughing) to escape, leaving a severe open wound.
Behavior: Diurnal, frantic, intelligent, and visual. They recognize their owner and can learn to lick nectar from fingers, but HANDLING IS FORBIDDEN due to their fragile skin and extreme speed. Males are ruthlessly territorial and will kill each other if housed together.
Care and observations
Terrarium: Demand large, vertical glass terrariums (e.g., 24x18x36 inches for an adult). Mandatory furnishings include numerous smooth bamboo poles (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) and sturdy plants like Sansevieria or Pothos to sleep on. Hollow bamboo sections also serve as hiding spots and egg-laying sites.
Lighting and Temps: Being diurnal heliotherms, they need intense light, a MANDATORY 5.0 or 6% UVB lamp to synthesize D3, and a basking spot lamp creating a basking zone of 90-95°F (32-35°C). The cool zone of the tank should remain at 75-79°F (24-26°C).
Humidity and Water: Ambient humidity between 60% and 80%. They almost never drink from bowls. It is vital to heavily mist the terrarium 1-2 times daily, allowing them to lap up water droplets from the glass and leaves.
Diet: Mixed diet in the wild. In captivity, the staple is commercial crested gecko diet powder (CGD - Pangea/Repashy), supplemented 2-3 times a week with live insects (crickets, roaches, locusts) dusted with calcium and vitamins. They love mashed fresh tropical fruit pulp as an occasional treat.
