Species description
Geographical Origin and Habitat: Native to Eastern and Southern Africa, from Sudan to South Africa. Inhabits semi-arid savannas, thorn scrubs, and grasslands.
Taxonomy and Genetics: Belongs to the Testudinidae family. Formerly classified in the genus Geochelone as Geochelone pardalis.
Behavior and Habits: Strictly diurnal and terrestrial. Does not construct deep burrows but relies on shelter bushes. Does not hibernate under winter conditions.
Morphology: Features a highly domed carapace with yellow and black leopard-like patterns. Males are identified by a concave plastron and longer tail.
Care, breeding and tankmates
Terrarium Setup: Adults require spacious, predator-proof outdoor pens (minimum 10x10 feet) with shade plants. Juveniles can start in large indoor tortoise tables.
Lighting and Heating: Strong basking temperature of 35-38°C. High-output UVB lighting is mandatory for indoor setups. Must be moved indoors or provided heat when temperatures drop.
Humidity and Hydration: Maintain humidity between 40-70%. Provide a shallow, heavy water dish for drinking and soaking, cleaned daily.
Feeding and Supplementation: Strictly herbivorous, high-fiber, low-protein diet consisting of grasses, timothy hay, weeds, and cactus pads. Supplement with calcium powder.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful. Multiple tortoises can be kept together in large outdoor enclosures, provided there are multiple feeding sites.
Health and Common Diseases: Pyramiding of the shell from poor diet or humidity, and respiratory infections if kept in cold, damp conditions.
