Species description

Geographical Origin and Habitat: Indonesia, including the Moluccas and New Guinea. Inhabits tropical rainforests near rivers, streams, and coastal mangroves.

Taxonomy and Genetics: Family Agamidae, genus Hydrosaurus. The largest representative of the agamid family.

Behavior and Habits: Semi-aquatic, highly active, and excellent swimmer. Extremely skittish and easily startled; runs on water surface in the wild.

Morphology: Large dragon-like lizard, reaching up to 100 cm. Males develop a tall sail-like crest along the base of their tail and have larger heads.

Care, breeding and tankmates

Terrarium Setup: Requires an exceptionally large custom enclosure or greenhouse (minimum 200x100x200 cm). Must contain a large filtered pool (40 cm deep) and thick branches.

Lighting and Heating: Basking area at 35 °C, ambient daytime at 28-30 °C. Nighttime temperatures should not drop below 22 °C. High-output linear UVB is essential.

Humidity and Hydration: Keep humidity levels high (70-90%) through automated misting. The water pool is necessary for swimming, bathing, and drinking.

Feeding and Supplementation: Omnivorous. Diet includes gut-loaded crickets, roaches, fish, dark leafy greens, and soft fruits. Dust food with calcium and vitamins.

Compatibility: Males are highly territorial and will fight. A single male can be housed with two females in massive setups.

Health and Common Diseases: Prone to snout rubbing against cage walls due to panic, leading to infections. Susceptible to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) without UVB.
